Alumni Association Stone Cottage
Historic Restoration Project
History
Few colleges in the nation are graced with a campus as rich in beauty
and history as the Catonsville Campus of The Community College of
Baltimore County (CCBC Catonsville). Centuries old - surviving civil
war, neglect and major renovation. Our graceful campus has evolved from
the family estate of a wealthy industrialist to the vehicle of
educational accomplishment for an entire community.
Despite the timeless beauty of our campus, the historic buildings are in
ruins. In cooperation with the community, civic groups and local
businesses, CCBC is committed to restoring and maintaining several of
the historic buildings. In 1995, the CCBC Catonsville Alumni Association
voted to join this effort by adopting the Stone Cottage and agreed to
develop a budget and framework to restore the building and surrounding
site.
Stone Cottage
CCBC Catonsville Alumni Association Board of Directors is proud
to announce the "Stone Cottage Historic Restoration Project"
This substantial committment to the college and its history will serve
the following purposes:
1. Preserve and restore historic facilities;
2. Provide meeting space for alumni, students, and the community;
3. Be among the first community colleges in the nation to create a
visible home for the Alumni Association on campus.
Project Plan
After meeting with college officials to establish guidelines for
executing construction and determining costs, it was agreed and approved
by the Board of Trustees that the project would take form in three
phases. A fund raising goal of $400,000 was agreed on to begin Phase I
of this restoration campaign. Each phase of the project will be funded
on a "pay-as-you-go" basis as fund-faising efforts progress.
Phase I - Stone Cottage Alumni and Friends Walkway
The Stone Cottage was moved to its present site in 1986 to make way for
an addition to K Building. The new location is in a cluster of existing
buildings behind the Tudor House. The cottage is central to the campus
located near the ruins of the bowling alley and the gardener's cottage.
In Phase I, renovations to the interior and exterior of the Stone Cotage
from basement to roof will allow the Alumni Relations Office to relocate
from the Mansion into our own Alumni House. The Alumni and Friends
Walkway has been installed. Bricks engraved with the names of alumni and
community members who share the project's vision will continue to be
inserted in the pedestiran walkway as they are purchased. Phase I target
date was completed in July 2002.
Phase II - Alumni Plaza ad Gardener's Cottage Pavillion
Phase II plans will transform this structure into a functionl outdoor
pavilion. Inviting gardens and a plaza wall featuring named bricks will
be added to link the cottage pavilion with the Alumni House. The Alumni
Plaza will provide a beautiful setting for receptions and formal
gatherings. Phase II target date of completion is set for the future.
Phase III - Stone Cottage Addition
As the Alumni Association continues to grow, so will the demand for
additional meeting and office space. After the completion of Phases I
and II, an addition will be added to the Stone Cottage/Alumni House
permitting the original cottage to be converted into a large conference
space and an expanded Hall of Fame.
