CCBC Catonsville * Volleyball Coach, Athletic Director * 1970-1987
A 1969 graduate of the University of Southern California, Cathy Cain began her community college professional career in 1970, joining CCBC Catonsville as a physical education teacher and volleyball coach. Instrumental in bringing west coast power volleyball to the east coast and Baltimore, Maryland, Coach Cain quickly established CCBC Catonsville as a national, regional and state power in NJCAA Volleyball.
Over 19 seasons at CCBC Catonsville, she amassed an amazing 541-117 record for a .822 winning percentage at the JUCO level. A four-time NJCAA Region XX and Maryland JUCO Conference coach of the year, Coach Cain’s teams were NJCAA runner-up twice (1974-1975), appeared in six NJCAA Tournaments (1974-1976, 1979-1981) and captured a combined eight NJCAA Region XX and Maryland JUCO Conference titles.
Along the way, she served as CCBC Catonsville’s director of Athletics for 10 years (1975-1984) and the first-ever Region XX women’s director for six years (1975-1980), as well as hosted three NJCAA Volleyball Championships (1974-1976). Starting in 1988, Coach Cain continued her collegiate volleyball coaching career at Towson University in Towson, Maryland. She racked up another couple hundred wins there, going 201-143 in 10 seasons. Her teams captured the Big South Conference championship in 1994 and the America East regular season championship in 1996.
Cathy resides in Fort Pierce, Florida. She retired from CCBC Catonsville as an associate professor of Physical Education with 35 years of service in 2005.
