Cardinals Baseball earns #1 seed in Region XX Division II Tournament

The CCBC Catonsville Baseball team (33-14-1) has earned the #1 seed in the 2012 Region XX Division II Baseball Tournament and will receive a bye in the 1st round. CCBC Catonsville will open Regional play on Friday, May 11 at 1:00 vs the winner of the (Rappahannock/CCBC Dundalk vs CCBC Essex) 1st round contests. This contest and the entirety of the Region XX Tournament will be played at Frederick CC following the schedule below:

CCBC Catonsville Softball earns #1 seed, will host Region XX Division II Tournament
The CCBC Catonsville Softball team (41-11) have earned the #1 seed in the Region XX Division II Tournament, which will be held May 5-6 at CCBC Catonsville. The Cardinals will look to cap off an already impressive season, which includes winning the Maryland JUCO Conference Championship with a 21-1 record. In addition to the outstanding team accomplishments, several individuals have posted some very impressive statistical achievements:

CONNOR HIBBS HURLS NO-HITTER VS COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND

CCBC Catonsville right hander Connor Hibbs (Arundel High School) pitched the sixth no-hitter in team history on Saturday in a 10-0 win over the College of Southern Maryland. Hibbs’ five inning gem included only one base runner (who reached on an error). Hibbs faced the minimum of 15 batters in the game.
Hibbs had no walks and struck out seven, including fanning the side in order in the 4th inning. He allowed only one ball out of the infield in the game.
Kyle Porter led the offensive attack for Catonsville with 2 doubles in 2 official at bats, with 3 RBIs. Tyler Wood and Kyle Laplant added two hits each.

Cardinals drop exciting OT contest to Chesapeake College on Sophomore Night

On Sophomore night, the Cardinals really came to play. Each Sophomore finished in double digits in scoring. Melvin Barfield led the Cardinals in scoring with 26 points. Often and early, Barfield was dialed in from 3 point range. He made 5 3’s for the night. Lawrence Weldon added 16 points to the scoring total. Tyrone Smothers chipped in with 14 points and Kevin Jackson finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshmen Willie Kee was the 5th Cardinal to score in double figures with 14 points.

Weldon led the Cardinals in assists with 8 dimes. Smothers collected 7 assists for the game as well.

Leading by 8 points with 1:50 remaining in regulation, the Cardinals were unable to capitalize on free throw opportunities and fell to the visiting Skipjacks in overtime, 102-89. Despite the loss, it was a good night for the Sophomores and for their families/friends in attendance.

The Cardinals finished the regular season with an 8-18 mark. They begin conference tournament play on the 14th with a 7 PM contest at College of Southern Maryland.

Cardinals open Maryland JUCO Conference play with 74-69 win over nationally ranked Baltimore City


CATONSVILLE,MD - The Cardinals returned to action with their first conference home game. The Cardinals hosted the nationally ranked Panthers from Baltimore City Community College. Getting off to a solid start, the Cardinals were led in the first half by some clutch shooting from Willie Kee and Tyrone Smothers. Additionally, EJ Stanley and Kevin Jackson were solid on the defensive end and in the rebounding category. As a result, the Cardinals raced out to a 42-25 half-time lead.
The Cradinals opened the second half with a three by Tyrone Smothers to take their largest lead pf the game at 45-25, but Baltimore immediately turned up the pressure defensively and went on a 14-0 run over 6 minutes to cut the Cardinals lead to 45-39. The Cardinals however recovered with a 8-0 run of their own including triples from Tyrone Smothers and Che'von Giles. Fortunately, freshmen Dominique Fitts and Che'von Giles joined the efforts of Kee and Smothers and the Cardinals pulled out a 74-69 victory.
Again, Kee led the Cardinals in scoring with 20 points. Smothers added 16 points and Giles added 12 points to the scoring total. Fitts chipped in with 9 points. Kee also led the Cardinals in assists with 4. Jackson led the Cardinals in rebounding with 9 boards. Stanley chipped in with 6 boards as well.
The Cardinals return to action with a road game on November 22nd at College of Southern Maryland.

Former CCBC Catonsville Guard, Jonte "Too Tall" Hall, joins the Harlem Globetrotters

BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. – Former CCBC Catonsville Men’s Basketball Player Jonte Hall has been named as one of ten members of the Harlem Globetrotters 2012 rookie class. The Baltimore native, Hall was a graduate of Carver Vocational High School and a member of the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals 2001-2002 team.

He joins what could be the most electrifying and talented team in the history of the Globetrotter franchise. It could even rival the class of 1962, which featured Globetrotter legends Curly Neal, Smokey Gaines, and Jackie Jackson, and the class of 1977, which included legends Sweet Lou Dunbar and Billy Ray Hobley.
“The Globetrotters are excited to welcome a new generation of stars to carry on the storied tradition of the world’s most exciting basketball team, “ said Globetrotter CEO Kurt Schneider. “This year’s rookie class features some of the most talented and promising players across the world.”
When Jonte “Too Tall” Hall steps on the floor, he will become the shortest player in Globetrotter history at 5’2”. Hall joins the Globetrotters after one-and-a-half seasons with the rival Washington Generals.
In addition to being a former CCBC Catonsville student athlete, Jonte has also been a Camp Heritage Senior Counselor for the past 9 years. The Globetrotters will be making a Baltimore appearance at the 1st Mariner Arena on Dec. 30, 2011

CCBC Catonsville student athlete Audrey Gerlach named National Player of the Week


BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD. – CCBC Catonsville Volleyball student-athlete Audrey Gerlach, a sophomore Middle Hitter from Reisterstown, Md. (Franklin HS), has been named NJCAA Player of the Week. She is coming off an outstanding week during which she averaged 3.85 kills and 2.8 digs per set in leading the Lady Cardinals to a 5-1 record. Gerlach is currently leading the Maryland JUCO in hitting efficiency at 50%, a number that also ranks her #4 nationally.
This honor adds to Gerlach’s list of accomplishments which includes being named to the Hagerstown Community College New Horizon Tracy Leather Memorial All-Tournament Team in both 2010 and 2011, while also being named 1st Team All Maryland JUCO and 1st Team All Region XX in 2010.

CATONSVILLE WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS FREDERICK
CATONSVILLE, MD - The CCBC Catonsville women's volleyball team earned an impressive 3-0 victory over visiting Frederick Community College Thursday evening. The victory(26-24, 25-20, 25-23) was nothing short of spectacular as the Cardinals displayed mental toughness.
In the first set, the Cards faced an 18-10 deficit and in the third, a 20-14 deficit before scoring seven unanswered and grinding out a victory. Sophomore middle blocker Audrey Gerlach (Franklin)anchored the Cardinals offensive attack and was pleased with the team performance. "We've been working on staying up and keeping the momentum going," said Gerlach.

CCBC LADY CARDS SOCCER FALL TO COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND

CATONSVILLE, MD - On a hot and sticky Thursday evening in Catonsville, the Lady Cardinals soccer team fell to the College of Southern Maryland 3-1. The Cardinals struck first in the 26th minute where they were treated with an unassisted goal from Emily Boller roughly 25 yards out. The duration of the first half was controlled by the Cardinals however the second half was a different story.

Three goals from Southern Maryland, the first goal came in the 69th minute on a penalty kick, and goals in the 79th and 81st minutes earned them a 3-1 victory. The Cardinals hope to rebound from a disappointing loss this Sunday when they host Montgomery Rockville. Game time is set for 1 pm.

CCBC CATONSVILLE MEN’S SOCCER TEAM SPORTS TWO STRAIGHT WINS


CATONSVILLE, MD – The CCBC Catonsville men’s soccer team is riding a two game winning streak after beating home standing Chesapeake College 5-1 Tuesday night followed by a 3-0 victory over visiting Anne Arundel Wednesday evening.
After picking up their first win of the season Tuesday evening in Wye Mills, the Cardinals treated the home crowd Wednesday evening to a 3-0 victory over Anne Arundel. “Our players are starting to really gel with one another and it’s clearly showing,” said Head Coach Haislip. “When we control the tempo of the game, victories are bound to happen.”
The highlight of Wednesday night’s game came in the 55th minute when Kevin Medrano (Perry Hall) scored by header off a beautifully crossed ball from Michael Black (Perry Hall). That put the Cards up 2-0 and set the tone for the second half. “The goal was very well executed and it really fired our guys up,” said Haislip.
In the 40th minute Fadipe Barnabas (Owings Mills) scored within a minute of him checking in off a cross from Medrano. Later in the 85th minute, Cody Koester (Northeast) fired off a shot from 30 yards out that gave the Cards a 3-0 lead. Benjamin Ossie (Overlea) was credited with the assist.
The Cardinals look to win three straight when they travel to North East, Maryland Friday evening when they take on Cecil College. Game time is set for 4 pm.

LADY CARDINALS SOCCER TEAM EARNS FIRST VICTORY OF 2011


CATONSVILLE, MD – The CCBC Catonsville Lady Cardinals earned their first victory of 2011 by defeating visiting Frederick Community College 4-1 on a beautiful evening in Catonsville.
The Cardinals controlled field position nearly the entire game and sported a comfortable four goal lead at halftime. In the 10th minute, Jennifer Simkin (Centennial) put the Cards on the scoreboard off an assist from Emily Boller (Catonsville). Just eight minutes later, Simkin scored unassisted. Katelyn Eagan (Sparrows Point) got a perfect touch pass from Boller in the the 33rd minute giving the Cards a three goal lead. In the 44th minute, Abigail Molofsky (Pikesville) tallied an unassisted goal.
The second half featured stellar play from goalie Nicole Chupka (Catonsville) and her defenders as they played with the lead. The Cardinals were inches away from building a bigger lead in the second half with numerous shots from Seanita Ross (Old Mill) and Ashley Cluster (Old Mill). A 78th minute goal from Frederick spoiled a victory by shutout.
Simkin was proud of her teammates afterwards and thrilled for the team to pick up their first victory. “It was definitely a real big confidence booster,” said Simkin. “Everyone got to play and the win was a total team effort.”

DELAWARE TECH – STANTON TOP CCBC CATONSVILLE IN MENS SOCCER

CATONSVILLE, MD – On a cold, damp, and extremely windy evening in Catonsville, the CCBC men’s soccer team lost to Delaware Tech – Stanton 4-2. With wind gusts reaching up to 30 mph during the game, possession was lopsided to the south goal of the field during both halves.

In just the second minute of the game, Delaware Tech scored with a goal from John Procope assisted by Carlos Barriga. Tech’s offense pressured the Cardinals defense right out of the gate and caught them out of position. Procope would reach the net twice more earning him the respected “hat-trick”, scoring again in the 22nd and 27th minute.

Trailing 3-0 with just two minutes prior to half time, the Cardinals cut the deficit to 3-1 with a goal from Benjamin Ossie with an assist from Denair Mitchell.

The Cardinals came out in the second half shooting against the south goal and got a quick score in the 48th minute from Brandon Hirsch. An insurance goal from Delaware Tech in the 87th minute from Jhoham Osorio sealed victory 4-2.

LADY CARDINALS VOLLEYBALL FALL TO ALLEGANY COLLEGE OF MARYLAND

CATONSVILLE , MD – The CCBC Catonsville women’s volleyball team fell to Allegany College of Maryland Tuesday evening in three straight sets (15 - 25 , 22 - 25 , 17 – 25). With the loss, the Cardinals 2011 record drops to 2-3 while Allegany improves to 2-4.

The Cardinals got outplayed during the first game, however came back fighting in the second holding a seven to nine point lead until falling 22-25. Despite being down 0-2 and surrendering a comfortable lead in game two, the Lady Cards stayed focused thanks to strong leadership from sophomore captain, Abigail Williams. “There are no discouraging words on the court ever,” said Williams. We just keep playing, shake off whatever just happened and go get the ball next time.”

After an off day on Wednesday, the Cardinals travel to Wye Mills, Maryland on Thursday where they play Chesapeake College. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.

HAWKS EDGE OUT CARDINALS IN PHYSICAL GAME

DUNDALK, MD - The CCBC Catonsville men’s soccer squad lost a close 2-1 contest against Delaware Tech – Terry on a sunny afternoon at CCBC – Dundalk. The Cardinals had ample opportunities to put the ball in the net all afternoon, none better than with 30 seconds remaining in the game. A Kevin Medrano direct kick from twenty yards out came inches away from hooking into the lower right ’90 of the goal.
The Cardinals looked good early on as they controlled possession for most of the first half, however numerous off-side calls against them would take away potential one-on-one battles inside the ’18 with Hawks goalie Jalyn Mack.
In the 30th minute of game, Alvenso Honoro got the Hawks on the board from fifteen yards out, using the Cardinals defenders to his advantage as a screen on goalie Cody Koester. Later on in the 60th minute, the Hawks scored again giving them a two goal cushion. Finally, in the 75th minute, Cardinals forward Denair Mitchell ripped a shot from fifteen yards out making the deficit 2-1, which would be the final score.
Said Freshmen defender Benjamin Ossie, “We couldn’t finish, bottom line. Yeah, there were a lot of offside calls against us but that’s the way it goes sometimes.” The loss drops the Cardinals record to 0-3 however captain Kevin Medrano thinks, “this is a great team with a lot of potential.”
“Our team is young, but most of all the season is still young,” said Head Coach James Haislip. “I’m proud of our guys effort today, especially with their sense of urgency play after being down nearly the whole game.”

CCBC CATONSVILLE WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL GOES .500 IN WEEKEND TOURNAMENT

Lady Cardinals take 5th place in Dragon Invitational

COLUMBIA, MD - The CCBC Catonsville women’s volleyball team went 2-2 during the Howard Community College Dragon Invitational Tournament September 3-4. The Lady Cardinals began play on Saturday against Montgomery College where they lost 3 straight sets (18-25, 19-25, 14-25) losing the match. “We had a lot of errors on our side of the net,” said Head Coach Danielle Helwig.

Later on Saturday the Lady Cardinals rebounded, winning in three straight sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-11) against Northern Virginia Community College. “It was a nice to clean up a lot of errors from the previous match,” said Helwig. “We were much more aggressive this time around.”

After splitting on Saturday, The Lady Cardinals again split on Sunday losing to The College of Southern Maryland (18 - 25 , 12 - 25 , 26 - 24 , 19 – 25) and beating Howard Community College (25 - 20 , 26 - 24 , 28 - 30 , 25 – 11). “We came out in the fourth game strong against Howard and took fifth for the tournament,” said Helwig. I'm really pleased with how we did and I can already see improvement in a lot of the girls over the past two days, so we hold a lot of promise.”

CCBC CATONSVILLE MEN’S SOCCER BEGINS 2011 SEASON WITH TWO LOSSES
Cardinals Go 0-2 Against Mercyhurst North East and Monroe Respectfully

ROCHESTER, NY - The CCBC Catonsville men’s soccer team began the 2011 campaign 0-2 after a tough overtime loss to Mercyhurst North East College on Saturday, September 3rd and losing Sunday the 4th to Monroe Community College.

In the Cardinals season opener against Mercyhurst, two second half goals from Kevin Medrano had the game tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. A Mercyhust goal, rebounded off a Tyler Hall save with two minutes remaining in the first overtime by Willy Bizokunda sealed victory for the Saints, 3-2. It was an unfortunate season opening loss for the Cardinals considering they outshot the Saints 19-6. “The fact that we outshot our opponent showed we kept possession, but we broke down in the finishing department,” Said Head Coach James Haislip. “Nerves got the best of our players but much promise was shown.”

The Cardianals displayed early season offensive production with 4 points between Kevin Medrano and Seydina Sourmagal. Sournagal who is credited for two assists, led Medrano for a game tying goal in the last five minutes of the second half. “We fought our way back from the moment they scored,” said Medrano. “We will take this as a learning experience.

Monroe outshot the Cardinals 18-7 on Sunday, controlling the tempo of the game and eventually winning 2-0. “Our 19 freshmen hopefully learned what it takes to get to the next level,” said Haislip. Cardinal’s goalie Cody Koester tallied nine saves and credits the defense for “playing their hearts out.” With the loss, the Cardinals fell to 0-2 however enjoyed playing competitively against a national powerhouse in Monroe. “We played very well for playing the 26th team in the country,” said Koester. “We never gave up.”
