Phys Ed-Outdoor Activities
PEOD 100 – 1 Credit
Backpacking
Applies basic techniques of backpacking and camping; includes day hikes and an overnight weekend camping trip into a wilderness area. Students provide sleeping bags and food.
PEOD 101 – 2 Credits
Hiking and Backpacking
Introduces the knowledge and skills of trail hiking and backpacking techniques. Activities include a classroom session and a three day novice trip into a wilderness area.

PEOD 103 – 1 Credit
Camping
Introduces all aspects of family camping; meets for 8 hours in the classroom; includes a 3-day weekend camping trip with the class; camping gear provided.

PEOD 105 – 1 Credit
Canoeing
Includes an orientation to water safety and solo and tandem canoeing techniques; involves canoe trips on various Maryland waterways.
Prerequisite: RDNG 051 or ESOL 044
PEOD 106 – 2 Credits
White Water Canoeing
Introduces basic skills in handling small craft; covers care and selection of equipment, safe handling techniques, self-rescue methods and skills used in helping or rescuing others. This course may be used to fulfill 2 elective credits.
Prerequisite: Swimming ability

PEOD 109 – 2 Credits
Mountaineering I
Provides basic beginning knowledge and skills in rock and sport climbing; emphasizes terminology, equipment and safety; covers the skills of climbing, rappel and basic rope work. Taken as an 8-week Spring semester offering or in four condensed days in the Summer session. This course may be used to fulfill 2 elective credits.

PEOD 110 – 2 Credits
Mountaineering II
Provides intermediate knowledge and skills in rock, sport and multi-pitch climbing; emphasizes terminology, equipment and safety; covers the more advanced skills of multi-pitch climbing and belay, intermediate rope and knotcraft and the opportunities to build anchors and rope systems. Taken as an 8-week Spring semester offering or in four condensed days in the Summer session. This course may be used to fulfill 2 elective credits.

PEOD 111 – 1 Credit
Wilderness Adventure
Includes whitewater rafting, backpacking, and primitive camping; gives comprehensive classroom training in preparation for a class trip. Major equipment provided.

PEOD 120 – 1 Credit
Sailing
Provides the satisfaction of controlling the wind and sail in sailing sessions on the water; gives basic classroom introduction to terminology, theories of sailing, and boating safety; MD Department of Natural Resources Safe Boating certificate issued to students who pass the examination. A sailing fee is charged.

PEOD 130 – 1 Credit
Skiing
Provides the beginner to the advanced skier with in-class and on-slope instruction. Four-day, three-night ski trip, transportation, accommodations, equipment, most meals and lessons included in trip fee.
