Developmental education and learning assistance
CCBC offers a comprehensive array of courses and services to assist under-prepared students. The purpose of developmental education is to develop in each learner the skills and attitudes necessary for the attainment of academic, career and life goals. CCBC ensures proper placement by assessing each learner’s level of preparedness for college course work.

Developmental courses
CCBC offers students the opportunity to improve basic skills through developmental courses in reading, writing and mathematics. These courses prepare students for college level instruction. Students who are placed in developmental courses must enroll in these courses within their first 15 credit hours.

Students without the minimal skills required for developmental courses may be restricted from registering from those courses. In many cases, these students will be referred to the Academic Skills Enhancement (ASE) courses offered by the Continuing Education and Economic Development Division. ASE courses prepare students for developmental course work.

Students who are placed in developmental reading courses are required to enroll in SDEV 101, Achieving College Success. This course, which is open to all students, orients students to college and offers instruction in goal setting, general study skills and critical thinking/problem solving.

Students may elect to enroll in special sections of developmental courses that are offered with learning communities. Learning communities, which pair developmental courses with credit courses, help students apply their new skills to college-level courses.
