General Education
 
The Maryland Higher Education Commission stipulates that in order to receive associate degrees, students must fulfill not only the requirements of their specific programs of study but also those of a general education. The specific General Education course requirements may vary with the type of associate degree.

General Education Course Requirements
Set forth below are the course requirements, by category, for each type of associate degree.

Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees (except in Nursing)
Associate of Science in Nursing
Associate of Applied Science

Arts and Humanities 6 credits (two disciplines; one course must be a Communication course)
Social and Behavioral Sciences 6 credits (two disciplines)
Biological and Physical Sciences 7 - 8 credits (one course must be a laboratory course)
Mathematics 3 - 4 credits
English Composition 6 credits (ENGL 101 and ENGL 102)

Interdisciplinary and Emerging Issues 8 credits, distributed as follows:

  • Wellness and Health
  • Information Technology
  • Global, Historical and Cultural Perspectives
3 credits
3 credits
2 credits

Total: 36 - 38 credits *

*One of the 3-credit General Education courses must be a Diversity course.
