Program Description:

The Associate's degree in Mortuary Science is required for mortician license in the State of Maryland. This curriculum is nationally accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education, 38 Florida Avenue, Portland, Maine 04103, 207-878-6530, and is designed to train students for positions as morticians and prepare them to meet the State's licensing requirements. The Maryland State Board of Morticians requires 1,000 hours of apprenticeship with 20 funeral assists and 20 embalming assists. Two-thirds of the educational requirements (46 credits) must be met with a 2.0 grade point average to be verified with a certified copy of the college transcript, before the individual goes before the Board for an approval of an apprenticeship program.

Students who elect this curriculum should recognize that certain specialized courses may not transfer to some four-year colleges. Upon graduation, students will take the National Board Examination, which is accepted by the Maryland State Board of Morticians as fulfilling the written requirements for license. They must also make application with the Maryland State Board of Morticians to take the Maryland Mortuary Science Law and Practical Examination. It is the responsibility of out-of-state students to familiarize themselves with their own state's licensing laws as they relate to apprenticeship and educational requirements.

Students who enter the degree program with no prior college credits or who have not received credit for their General Education requirements elsewhere must complete their General Education requirements before beginning their "Business-Science Requirements" and Mortuary Science (MORS) courses. These students will be assessed for math and reading skills prior to their first registration and may be required to take preparatory courses in reading and math prior to taking their General Education requirements. Students who have successfully completed their General Education requirements at CCBC or elsewhere should register for their "Business-Science" courses before beginning their Mortuary Science courses.

Health facilities are not available on campus. Students should see their own physicians or call 911 in a case of an emergency. Off-campus embalming classes are held at the University of Maryland Medical School, which has it's own emergency room.

Admission to this program is a separate process from admission to the college. Admission to the School of Health Profession's programs is competitive and selective, and is based on published criteria. Information about admissions processes for the programs in te School of Health Professions and the Selective Admissions Application form are available in the Office of Selective Admissions in Room J-101 on the Essex Campus or by calling 410-680-6112. This information is also available in the Admissions or Records and Registration office on each campus.

School of Health Professions Policies: Students in the School of Health Professions are expected to conduct themselves according to an honor code, exhibit professional behavior, communicate effectively in English, provide proof of health insurance and immunizations, and may be asked to submit to a criminal background check and random urine drug testing.
