Program Description:
This program provides students with education and training to prepare
them for entry-level positions in human services as well as for transfer
to four-year institutions to attain professional degrees. Graduates of
this program can expect to find employment serving a range of client
populations including persons with physical and developmental
challenges, the homeless, elderly and children with special needs.
Through the introductory courses, particularly HUMS 101, students may
identify special career interests and choose specialized curriculum
options which support that choice. The options include: the certificate
option, counseling/mental health, supported employment/special
education, human services administration, eldercare and social work.
Students should be advised that options of social work, special
education, administration, and certain types of counseling require a
minimum of a four-year degree.
Program Outcomes
Graduates of this program will be able to:
-
Understand and apply psychological and sociological theory to client
situations;
-
Implement and evaluate a program based on assessment of client needs;
-
Use knowledge of community resources to efficiently meet client needs;
-
Effectively communicate using verbal and non-verbal skills with
individuals and groups;
-
Participate as a team member in a helping agency or organization;
-
Use management and conflict resolution skills appropriate to program
procedures;
-
Act in a professional and ethical manner in carrying out all duties
and responsibilities in the helping environment.
Students who choose this curriculum and desire to transfer courses to a
four-year institution should check with the program coordinator and an
academic advisor. While many courses will transfer, certain specialized
courses may not.
