NURN 005 – 0 Credits, 1 Billable Hours
Dosage for Nurses

Provides a review of the computations necessary to accurately compute drug problems. The course introduces the metric system and IV calculations. Formulas for calculating drug dosage for nurses are presented.

Prerequisites: Admission to the nursing program. Eligibility for college math requirement, BIOL 220, BIOL 221 (both with a grade of "C" or higher), ENGL 101, PSYC 101

NURN 006 – 0 Credits, 1 Billable Hours
Dosage for Advanced Placement Nursing

Reviews the mathematical skills necessary for the safe preparation of medications for adult and pediatric clients. Formulas for calculating drug dosages for oral, topical, and parenteral medications are presented in a clinical situation format.

Prerequisite: Admission to the LPN to RN Transition Program or the Paramedic to RN Program.

NURN 103 – 5 Credits
Foundations of Nursing Practice

Establishes a firm basis on which to build subsequent practical nursing courses. The emphasis is on the essential principles, concepts, and skills needed for the student to begin learning the role of a practical nurse. Fundamental principles, concepts, and technology for the safe performance of basic nursing skills are provided through faculty guided campus laboratory and off-campus learning experiences in acute and long-term adult health care settings. The Neuman System Model is the framework for the study of client care. Corequisities: NURN 104 or written permission from program director.

NURN 104 – 1 Credit
Foundation of Nursing Practice Lab

Foundations of Nursing Lab establishes a firm basis to build subsequent practical nursing courses. The focus is on the essential principles and skills needed for the student to begin learning the role of the practical nurse. Practice and performance of basic nursing skills are provided through faculty guided campus laboratory. NURN 103 is the theory associated with this course.

Corequisite: NURN 103 or written permission from program director. Prerequistes: ENGL 052 or ESOL 052, and RDNG 052 or ESOL 054, and MATH 082; and eligibility for ENGL 101.

NURN 110 – 2 Credits
Introduction to Pharmacology

Provides instruction in basic pharmacology and drug administration skills needed for safe and effective medication administration. Content includes all components of drug preparation and administration including the essential drug knowledge needed to adequately assess and evaluate drug effects in the adult client. Opportunities to practice drug preparation and administration procedures will be provided in NURN 103 Foundation of Nursing Practice. The Neuman System Model is the framework for the study of client care. 2 credits of theory (30 clock hours)

Adult Health Care I

Provides a foundation in essential principles, concepts, and skills needed for the care of clients with acute and chronic alterations in integument, musculoskeletal, nervous, and endocrine systems. The course builds on basic nursing knowledge and skills established during the first semester of the program. Opportunities to apply theoretical concepts and perform nursing skills specific to adult and older adult clients are provided through faculty guided campus laboratory and off-campus learning experiences in acute and long-term health care settings. NURN 112 – 5 Credits
Adult Health Care II

Covers the principles, concepts, and skills essential for providing care for clients with acute and chronic alterations in reproductive, blood and lymph, immune, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary systems. The student is further introduced to conditions where clients require more complex nursing care such as oncology, shock, and injuries resulting from severe trauma and multi-system problems. Opportunities to apply theoretical concepts and skills continue as the student provides care, with faculty guidance, in acute and long-term care settings. The Neuman System Model is the framework for the study of client care. 3 credits of theory (45 clock hours); 2 credits of clinical (90 clock hours)

NURN 113 – 3 Credits
Mental Health Issues/Care

Presents essential principles, concepts, and skills needed for promotion of mental health and care of mentally ill client systems across the lifespan. Content includes growth and development, stress and behavior, and common forms of mental illnesses. Opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge and perform nursing skills are provided through faculty guided learning experiences in acute and/or community-based psychiatric health care settings that introduce the student to care of mentally ill client systems. The Neuman System Model is the framework for the study of client care. 2.67 credits of thoery (40.05 clock hours); 0.33 credits of clinical (15 clock hours)

NURN 114 – 5 Credits
Maternal/Child Health Care

Presents essential principles, concepts, and skills needed for the care of maternal-family and pediatric client systems. Content includes concepts of drug administration unique to these client systems. Opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge and perform nursing skills are provided through faculty guided campus laboratory and off-campus learning experiences in acute and community health care settings that introduce the student to care of the maternal-family during antepartal, interpartal, postpartal, and newborn periods and to pediatric client systems. Trends in Practical Nursing

Assists the student in transitioning from the role of student to that of entry-level practitioner. Emphasis is placed on responsibilities associated with licensure, ethical and legal issues, employment strategies, continuing professional growth, and leadership and management principles for the health care environment. 2 credits of theory (30 clock hours)

NURN 150 – 7 Credits
Fundamentals of Nursing

Introduces foundations, principles, and concepts necessary for the nursing student to begin socialization into the role of the nurse; provides structure for the student to begin theoretical studies through the organizing framework of the CCBC Nursing Curriculum. Presents concepts and principles in human needs, nursing process, communication, life-cycle, teaching/learning, and spiritual and cultural factors. Uses campus labs and clinical experiences to enable students to apply theoretical content and basic skills to patient-centered care. Teaches beginning skills for the care of patients along the health continuum. Uses faculty directed clinical experiences to increase understanding of the impact of illness on patients and their significant others. 4 credit hours of theory (60 clock hours); 3 credits of clinical (135 clock hours)

NURN 151 – 5 Credits
Foundations of Nursing Concepts

Presents the principles and concepts necessary to introduce students to the role of the nurse generalist. Students begin theoretical studies which are based on the CCBC concept based curriculum. Emphasis is placed on the nursing process, communication, and safety as well as the concepts of aging, comfort, culture, infection control, spirituality, and end of life. Supervised simulations and clinical experiences are designed to introduce students to the basics of nursing practice and the role of the nurse generalist. Corequisities: NURN 152 with a minimum grade of C Prerequisities: MATH 083; ENGL 101, BIOL 220, BIOL 221, BIOL 230, all with a minimum grade of C; PSYC 101, NURN 005 with satisfactory grade. NURN 152 – 3 Credits
Nursing Assessment and Interventions

Presents the skills and the nursing practice and health assessment with adult patient emphasis. The learning experience is based on the CCBC concept based curriculum and provides opportunities for students to gain cognition, technical, and interpersonal skills necessary to provide safe, effective nursing care. Supervised simulations and skills laboratory experiences are designed to assist learners to integrate critical thinking , caring behaviors, technological innovations, and skills performance in the progression toward the role of the nurse generalist. Co-requisities: NURN 151 with a minimum grade of C.

Prerequisites: MATH 083, PSYC 101; and ENGL 101, BIOL 220, BIOL 221, all with a minimum grade of C or higher.

NURN 153 – 8 Credits
Fundamentals of Nursing Concepts

Presents the principles and concepts necessary to introduce students to the role of the nurse generalist. Students begin theoretical studies which are based on the CCBC Concept-based curriculum and which provide opportunities for students to gain congnitive, technical, and interpersonal skills necessary for the practice of nursing. The learning experiences, including classroom instruction, supervised simulations and clinical experiences, are designed to assist learners to integrate critical thinking, caring behaviors, technological innovations, and skills performance into safe effective nursing care. Prerequisities: ENGL 101, BIOL 220, BIOL 221, BIOL 230 all with a C or better and PSYC 101. NOTE: An additional 119.00 diangostic fee is due at time of registration.

NURN 160 – 6 Credits
Nursing Concepts I

Prepares students for the nurse generalist in the care of patients in acute care settings. Emphasis is placed on the role of the nursing care of homeostasis, perfusion, oxygenation, metabolism, and nutrition. Supervised simulations and clinical experiences are designed to simulate critical thinking and increase knowledge of adult patient care.

Prerequisites: NURN 151 and NURN 152 NOTE: An additional $83.00 diagnostic test fee is required at time of registration.

NURN 210 – 5 Credits
Nursing Care of the Adult Patient I

Prepares the nursing student to be an effective practitioner in the care of the adult patient. Emphasizes the nursing care of patients with selected fluid and electrolyte, respiratory, immunology, and endocrine conditions; the influence of the aging process; concepts of health promotion and restoration and nursing in community settings. Uses the nursing process and critical thinking to guide therapeutic nursing interventions. Provides clinical experiences to enable students to apply theory and practice skills under the supervision of nursing faculty. 3 credit hours of theory (45 clock hours), 2 credit hours of clinical (90 clock hours).

NURN 211 – 2 Credits
Introduction to Perioperative Nursing

This course explores the role of the registered nurse who provides patient care in the operating room. Specialized duties of the scrub nurse and the circulating nurse will be presented in the classroom, lab, and operating room setting. The course is designed to increase knowledge and interest in operating room nursing for students in a registered nursing program.

Prerequisite: NURN 210 with a "C" or better or permission of Nursing Program Administrator

NURN 212 – 4 Credits
Maternal-Newborn Nursing and Women's Healthcare

Presents facts, principles, concepts, and techniques necessary to meet the health needs of the maternity family during the childbearing period and women throughout the life cycle; covers physiological, psychological and social/cultural factors; health promotion, maintenance, and restoration; effective communication and pertinent ethical/legal issues; pharmacology, nutrition and patient education. Derives nursing actions from application of the nursing process. Provides faculty selected and guided clinical laboratory experience in community agencies in both inpatient and ambulatory care sites. 3 credit hours of theory (45 clock hours); 1 credit hour of clinical (45 clock hours)

NURN 214 – 4 Credits
Principles of Psychiatric Nursing Care

Examines basic concepts in the dynamics and treatment of psychiatric disorders and the nurse's role in providing care across the heatlh continuum; covers history and trends of psychiatric care, treatment modalities, interviewing skills, and the psychopathology and nursing care of the major mental illnesses. Enables students to use critical thinking to develop strategies of intervention based upon the nursing process. Provides clinical laboratory experience in various health care systems to give students opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge. 2 credit hours of theory (30 clock hours); 2 credit hours of clinical (90 clock hours)

NURN 215 – 7 Credits
LPN to RN Transition

Prepares the Licensed Practical Nurse to enter the second year of the registered nursing program at CCBC. Information from the first year nursing courses (NURN 150, NURN 210, and NURN 212) is presented in a condensed format. Emphasis is placed on the role of the registered nurse in the care of patients with selected fluid and electrolyte, respiratory, and endocrine conditions, as well as selected maternal/child nursing care concepts. The nursing process and critical thinking are used to guide the performance of therapeutic nursing interventions. Clinical experiences are planned to provide students with opportunities to apply theory and practice the role of the registered nurse under the supervision of nursing faculty. 6.25 credit hours of classroom theory (33.75 clock hours), .75 credit hours of clinical (93.75 clock hours).

NURN 217 – 3 Credits
Mental Health Nursing Concepts

examines the nursing care of patients, families and groups to meet the emotional, behavioral, and social demands of life. Emphasis is placed on the concepts of affective continuum, cognition, nutrition, personal interaction and psychosocial integrity through didactic and clinical experiences.

Prerequisites: SOCL 101, PSYC 103 and NURN 160.

NURN 218 – 3 Credits
Maternal-Newboard Nursing Concepts

prepares students to assume the role of the nurse generalist in the care of childbearing families. Emphasis is placed on exploring of the conepts of childbearing, neonatal adaption, and family adaption. Through didactic and clinical learning experiences, students are prepared to support women and their families from preconception through the birth process by assisting and teaching them to care for themselves and a new human life. Prerquisites: SOCL 101, PSYC 103 and NURN 160.

NURN 219 – 8 Credits
Paramedic to RN Transition

Paramedic to RN Transition prepares the qualified Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic to enter the CCBC registered nursing program with advanced standing. Information from nursing program courses (NURN 150, NURN 210, and NURN 220) is presented in a condensed format. Emphasis is placed on the role of the registered nurse in the care of clients with selected health care needs on various levels of the health care continuum. The nursing process and critical thinking are used to guide the acquisition of nursing knowledge and the performance of therapeutic nursing interventions and client teaching. Clinical experiences are planned to provide students with opportunities to apply theory and practice to the role of the registered nurse under the supervision of nursing faculty. 6 credit hours (90 clock hours); 2 credit hours of clinical (90 clock hours)

Nursing Care of the Adult Patient II

Prepares the nursing student to function as an effective practitioner in the care of the adult patient. Emphasizes the collaborative care and management of patients with selected cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal, and musculoskeletal conditions. Provides clinical experiences that enable students to apply theory and perform skills under the supervision of nursing faculty in acute and critical care settings; introduces surgical nursing through selective experiences in ambulatory and in-patient operative settings. 3 credit hours of theory (45 clock hours); 2 credit hours of clinical (90 clock hours)

NURN 224 – 1 Credit
Community Based Nursing

Exposes the nursing student to health care in a variety of settings such as hospice, senior day care, and out-patient clinics. Emphasizes the nursing role in health promotion maintenance, and therapeutic communication. 1 credit hour of theory (15 clock hours)

NURN 226 – 4 Credits
Nursing Care of Children

Emphasizes a child-family centered approach from the infant through the adolescent; covers common disturbances in physiologic and developmental well-being, nursing interventions appropriate to the needs of the patient, current trends in health care, socio-cultural factors in health maintenance, and the promotion of optimal health and the quality of life. Provides clinical laboratory experience that reflects current focus and changing trends; gives students opportunity to implement nursing interventions in the care of children in preventative as well as restorative medicine. 2 credit hours of theory ( 30 clock hours); 2 credit hours of clinical (90 clock hours)

Nursing Professional Practice Concepts

prepares students for the responsibilities and challenges of the nurse generalist within the health care system. Emphasis is placed on the nursing concepts of advoccy, delegation, ethics, health law, leadership, management and professionalism to facilitate an effective transition from student to registered nurse.

NURN 230 – 5 Credits
Nursing Care of the Adult Patient III

Concludes the three-course sequence; prepares the student nurse for the transition to the role of the registered nurse in the care of adult clients. Emphasizes the collaborative care and management of groups of clients with selected neuroscience, onocologic, renal, and multi-system conditions. Provides supervised clinical experiences that enable students to assume the role of the Registered Nurse in the management and delegation of nursing care of clients with multi-system problems. 3 credit hours of theory (45 clock hours); 2 credit hours of clinical (90 clock hours)

NURN 235 – 7 Credits
Nursing Concepts II Care of Children and Adults

examines the nurse generalist role in the provision of nursing care to children and adults in acute care and community settings. Emphasis is placed on the concepts of child health, immunity, mobility and community-based care. Clinical, lab and simulation experiences will augment didactic learning in acute care and community settings. NOTE: An additional $83.00 diagnostic test fee is required at time of registration.

NURN 236 – 8 Credits
Nursing Concepts III

Prepares the student nurse for the transition to the role of the registered nurse. Emphasis is placed on the concepts of cellular regulation, elimination, neural regulation, perfusion, and sencory/perception. Supervised simulations and clinical experiences are designed to provide students with the opportunity to assume the role of the nurse generalist to manage groups of ptients and delegate appropriate tasks. NOTE: An additional $83.00 diagnostic test fee is required at time of registration. Corequisite: NURN 229
