President's Community- Based Job Training Grants
A grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to the Community College of Baltimore County
GOALS
The project focuses on the health care industry, which meets the definition of a high growth/ high demand industry as specified by the U.S. Department of Labor. The project will:
-
provide resources to complete career lattices in three high-demand health practice areas
-
create processes for intra-institutional articulation linking non-credit training to credit education; and
-
encourage incumbent workers to advance their careers through formal recognition of their knowledge, skills and experience.
OBJECTIVES and ACTIVITIES:
1.Complete development of 3 health career lattices through distinct capacity building activities:
a. Clinical Lab Assistant (CLA) and Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT): CCBC plans to re-activate its MLT program and create a new CLA program.
b. Dental Assistant and Dental Hygienist: CCBC already offers non-credit programming for dental assistants. The CBJTG will allow CCBC to develop a new accredited dental hygiene program, including a new dental lab.
c. Nursing & Patient Care: CCBC offers many programs in the nursing/ patient care career lattice. Project activities include: outfitting simulation labs that can be used for students enrolled in all programs areas; creating an industry-driven, standardized Nurse Extender curriculum for delivery at both the high school and college levels; expanding current ADN program enrollments (via classes at Franklin Square Hospital); and, in partnership with Towson University, developing an accelerated ADN-to-MS curriculum to speed more nurses into the ranks of college faculty.
2. Create a replicable model of intra-institutional articulation that offers healthcare workers credit for credentials and prior learning, as well as inducements to pursue career advancement.
a. Clinical Lab Assistant (non-credit) into Med Lab Tech (credit)
b. Dental Assistant (non-credit) into Dental Hygiene (credit)
c. Nurse Assistant (non-credit) into LPN (credit)
3. Increase workforce development in the three health practice areas by expanding outreach, recruitment, training, and education, via
a. Baltimore County Office of Workforce Development – to job seekers and employers
b. CCBC’s own counseling, website, financial aid, and outreach services
c. Other partners – Franklin Square Hospital, BACH, Balto. Co. Public Schools
