Mix Media Drawing
Experience drawing inspired by the work of artists Kathy Kolwitz and William Kentridge. Plein Air Landscape Painting in Oil
Paint landscapes in Baltimore County "en plein air," or in the open air. Discuss the history of plein air painting; plein air materials; effective composition; color mixing, relationships, and effects; balance and coherence; the limitations and opportunities of alla prima painting; the pursuit of a personal vision; and the presentation of your work. This will take place mostly outdoors and offsite locations in Baltimore County, weather permitting.

Eastern Calligraphy and Ink- Painting
Learn to appreciate Asian painting through realizing the history and philosophy from the precursors' work. Students will also learn to recognize the general categories of Chinese painting: plant, calligraphy, figure, landscape etc. In additional studio time, students will be involved in Asian experimental art practice, such as designing your own stamp, painting on a paper fan, and experiencing different type of papers. Foundations of Watercolor
Learn through a systematic process how to execute a detailed line drawing, transfer it to the watercolor paper, and practice flat washes with round and flat brushes. Through discussions, learn to demonstrate and experiment with creating tints and complementary colors. Intro to Mural Making: Community-Based Murals
Work collaboratively to create a panel mural to be donated to a local community organization. Design, plan and execute a medium scale panel mural by the end of this course. Learn about the latest approaches to community-based murals. Materials fee of $25 will be collected the first session. Students will be asked to bring other basic painting supplies.

Painting with Wax: Encaustic Painting
Using heated wax and pigment worked together, create a painting that has texture and dimension. Created by the ancient Greeks, encaustic painting (to burn in) is one of the oldest of painting techniques. This technique also may use brush and knife or add inclusions such as fiber, twigs or found objects. Materials cost of $25 due at first class.

Printmaking
Explore printmaking techniques and design by creating collographs, linoleum prints, woodcuts, and using a painterly approach to making monoprints. Study includes an overview of ideas behind making original prints, working in multiples and using prints as an extension of your art.
