Basic Math Skills for the Health Care Worker

The math skills reviewed in this class are directly related to math used in allied health courses and in the health care field. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions and decimals, converting fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions and using the metric system for measurements will be presented along with how to setup basic algebraic equations to solve health care problems (e.g., dosages).

New Requirements!

Beginning Spring 2009, all students must complete Medical Terminology prior to taking Nursing Assistant.

This Maryland Board of Nursing approved course prepares you to function as a nursing assistant in a variety of healthcare settings. Upon completion of Theory and Clinical, you are eligible to take the state GNA certification examination. To receive an award of completion, you must successfully complete both Nursing Assistant Theory and Clinical. Perfect attendance is mandatory for all classes and clinical. Clinical placement provides experience in area nursing homes under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Proof of current negative TB skin test or a negative chest x-ray reading required before admission to clinical. RN Case Manager/Delegating Nurse Training for Assisted Living

Created to update the knowledge and skills of current Assisted Living Facility (ALF) RN Case Managers / Delegating Nurses and those with an interest in entering this field. This Maryland Board of Nursing approved course provides a basic foundation for the RN who:

Medicine Aide Training
If you are currently employed as a CNA/GNA in a Maryland licensed long-term care (LTC) facility with a minimum of one year (2000 hours over the past three years) of compensated employment, this class is for you. Agency hours do not apply. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, you'll learn to perform skills necessary to become a Certified Medicine Aide (CMA). Content includes classroom instruction, skills lab practice, and clinical at a local LTC facility. After registration, and before the first class begins, complete reading and math assessments at the Dundalk Campus. All students are required to bring the following documentation to the first class:

• Original, current, active unencumbered Maryland CNA/GNA/CMA registry card
• Proof of a current negative TB skin test or a negative chest x-ray.
• Signed letter by the DON typed on LTC facility letterhead verifying a minimum of 8 hours of compensated employment as a CNA/GNA/CMA during the past two years.

You will learn basic anatomical structures of the eye and skull, common ophthalmic diseases and their symptoms and treatment. You also learn skills necessary to operate equipment in the ophthalmic office, assist with eye exam and provide patient education.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Medical Terminology, HIPAA and CPR certification.

Course graduates are eligible to take the International Association of Health Care Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) certification exam to become a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).

Central Service Technicians are responsible for material management, supply, processing and distribution in a health care facility. Central Service Technicians reprocess, decontaminate, disinfect, prepare, package, sterilize, and distribute medical-surgical instruments, equipment and soft goods products. Central Service Technicians work as part of a support service team in hospitals and large ambulatory care settings and earn $8-10 per hour to start with an increase after certification. The Surgical Technology (ST) series is a 13-month course of study divided into 4 modules. Surgical Technologists are integral members of the surgical team who work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses and other surgical personnel to deliver care to the surgical patient. Surgical Technologists must have the ability to work under pressure in stressful situations, be detail oriented, and be able to work quickly and accurately. They must be keenly sensitive to the surgical patient and other members of the surgical team. Clinical eligibility is in part dependant upon a criminal background check and random urine drug testing. Cost of testing is the responsibility of the student.
