Basic Math Skills for the Health Care Worker

The math skills reviewed in this class are directly related to math used in allied health courses and in the health care field. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions and decimals, converting fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions and using the metric system for measurements will be presented along with how to setup basic algebraic equations to solve health care problems (e.g., dosages).

Medical Terminology for Health Occupations

This course is an online version of Anatomy and Physiology for Health Occupations. (AHE519). It covers cellular structure and function, as well as the structure and function of each body system. CPR for Healthcare Providers

Healthcare Provider - Skills Check Off

Allows healthcare providers who have previously taken an American Heart Association online healthcare provider course to obtain a new healthcare provider card. This course represents skills testing (Part 2) with an AHA instructor to complete the certification process.

Heartsaver CPR
Total Cost $55 (Tuition $28 Fees $27)
Information about the American Heart Association (AHA) chain of survival, skills in CPR, and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for adults, infants and children. Upon successful completion of skills demonstration you will be presented with a successful completion card. For lay rescuers who are expected to respond to emergencies in the workplace and anyone who needs a credential documenting completion of a CPR course.

CPR and First Aid for Infants and Young Children

This 8-hour course is designed for childcare providers who need pediatric CPR and first aid instruction. Successful students will receive a CPR card from the American Heart Association and a certificate of completion.

Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine for the Contemporary Clinician

Health care practitioners learn the theory/practice of Chinese Medicine and learn now to incorporate them into clinical practices. The course includes history of traditional Chinese medicine, Law of Nature and the universe, Yin/Yang,Qi, meridians, the five seasons, five elements, eight principle theory, vital substances, and patterns of disharmony and acupuncture. Reiki for Health Care Professionals-Level I

Learn the history of the development of Reiki and how Qi (energy) is present in everything around us. You will also learn about how Qi flows through the human body and how Reiki influences this flow and affects disease/wellness. Reiki for Health Care Professionals-Level II

Expand your knowlwdge of Reiki and find out how to direct the Qi of others. Learn to perform hands-on positions and explain how Reiki affects the endocrine system of the human body. Reiki Master Training-Reiki Level III for Health Care Providers

EKG TECHNICIAN
CONTINUING EDUCATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
You must successfully complete Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced EKG in order to meet the eligibility requirements to sit for the National certification exam.

Basic EKG Technician Training

Designed to introduce students to EKG's and cardiac anatomy and physiology this first of three courses is designed to prepare students to sit for the National Certification as an EKG Technician. Topics to be covered include basic cardiac anatomy, patient preparation, and patient confidentiality.
Prerequisite: High school diploma or GED.

Intermediate EKG Technician Training

Expand on the knowledge and skill you acquired in Basic EKG. Learn to identify irregularities of the heart and distinguish more complex arrhythmia. Cardiac Modalities and Pharmacology are also covered in this course. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Basic EKG Technician Training.

Advanced EKG Technician Training

The last of three courses that allow you to take an exam to be a nationally certified EKG Technician. This will build on principles and skills attained in Basic and Intermediate EKG Training. Emphasis will be placed on complex heart rhythms, electrical disturbances, disorders and pacemakers.

VENIPUNCTURE/SPECIMEN COLLECTION TRAINING

VENIPUNCTURE CLASSES Beginning Sept 1, 2009: You must successfully complete prerequisites, Medical Terminology AHE534 and HIPAA AHC360 prior to taking Venipuncture classes.

Venipuncture & Specimen Collection Techniques

Learn to collect blood and body fluid specimens used in throat cultures, urinalysis and stool cultures, and prepare samples for testing in a lab. This course presents an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the various systems that require specimen collection, processing and handling of specimens, and laboratory operations. You must be computer literate and have Internet access to be successful in this course.

Venipuncture and Specimen Collection Clinical
Total Cost: $250 (Tuition: $50 Fees: $200)
Apply the skills obtained in the classroom in a clinical or a patient care setting. Supplement the training you received in the Venipuncture and Specimen Collection Techniques course. Your knowledge and skills in performing venipuncture will be assessed by a clinical monitor. Prepare for the National Health Career Association (NHA) certification exam.

IV Therapy Technician Training
Total Cost: $340 (Tuition: $150 Fees: $190)
Health care providers can learn how to initiate, maintain and discontinue intravenous therapies. You must already know how to draw blood and must present proof of training. This course is recommended for certified phlebotomists, emergency care providers, nurses, or others in the health care field. You must be computer literate and have access to the Internet to be successful in this course.

Nursing Support Technician II

CONTINUING EDUCATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

CCBC in cooperation with the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) offers an online nurse refresher theory course (NUR7000). This course equals 90 instructional hours and is approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing.

NUR 7000
This course at CSM/online must be completed within12weeks of registration. A CSM certificate of completion will be awarded to those who meet course requirements.

RN Case Manager/Delegating Nurse Training for Assisted Living
Total Cost $300 (Tuition $125 Fees $175)
Created to update the knowledge and skills of current Assisted Living Facility (ALF) RN Case Managers / Delegating Nurses and those with an interest in entering this field. This Maryland Board of Nursing approved course provides a basic foundation for the RN who:

•Delegates nursing functions in the ALF setting, including medication administration
•Teaches medication administration to the medication technician in assisted living.

The Maryland Community College Association for Continuing Education (MCCACET) is accredited as a provider of continuing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

DAY CARE PROVIDER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

You must complete CHI019 and CHI120 to meet the 90 hour child care certification requirements for director and senior staff at daycare facilities (COMAR 07.04.02).

Child Care I Growth and Development

This continuing education course satisfies 45 hours of the 90 hour requirements as stated in COMAR 07.04.01 for directors and senior staff in group child care centers. Child Care II Activities for Young Children

This continuing education course is designed to satisfy 45 hours of the 99 hour requirements as stated in COMAR 07.04.01 for directors and senior staff in group child care centers. Learn the role of the Pharmacy Technician in a pharmaceutical setting. This is the first of two courses leading to national certification as a Pharmacy Technician. Topics include roles and responsibilities of the pharmacy technician, drug classification, dosages, history of drugs in the US, legal and ethical issues surrounding drugs/medications and names, usages, contraindications of 100 drugs. Prerequisite: Successful completion of  Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology and Basic Math for Health Care Workers.

Pharmacy Technician Training II
Total Cost $500 (Tuition $300 Fees $200)
Students expand on the knowledge and skills gained in Pharmacy Tech Training I. Topics include the classification of the top 200 drugs, parential medications, therapeutic drugs, customer service, stocking issues, complex dosage formulas and customer service. Pre req: Successful completion of Pharm Tech I and recommendation of instructor.

This is an accelerated format for I and II

The Veterinary Assistant series prepares you to work directly in an animal hospital under the supervision of a veterinarian or veterinarian technician. The series consists of four courses and a supervised clinical placement in an animal hospital, throughout the course work. You must be computer literate and have internet access to be successful in this program. Clinical eligibility is in part dependant upon a criminal background check and random urine drug testing.
Cost of testing is the responsibility of the student.

Veterinary Assistant Training I
Total Cost $299 (Tuition $252 Fees $47)
This course introduces the student to the career of Veterinary Assistant. This is the first of four courses and focuses on the operation of the front office, role delineation, prevention and education. Students are introduced to basic veterinary terminology, anatomy and physiology, taking a medical history, euthanasia, and customer service.

This program is designed to help you work through a self-study program. You must successfully complete all six OPMA courses. Passing the exam at the end of this program and one year of experience in the field will make you eligible to sit for the certifying exam with JCAPHO. Ophthalmic Medical Assistant (OPMA)

This course is designed to teach the "self-study" program from the Joint Commission of Allied Health Professions-Ophthalmic (JCAHP-O). Upon the completion of this course and successful work experience, you are able to sit for national certification as an ophthalmic assistant. You will learn basic anatomical structures of the eye and skull, common ophthalmic diseases and their symptoms and treatment. You also learn skills necessary to operate equipment in the ophthalmic office, assist with eye exam and provide patient education.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Medical Terminology, HIPAA and CPR certification.

Central Service Technicians are responsible for material management, supply, processing and distribution in a health care facility. Central Service Technicians reprocess, decontaminate, disinfect, prepare, package, sterilize, and distribute medical-surgical instruments, equipment and soft goods products. Central Service Technicians work as part of a support service team in hospitals and large ambulatory care settings. If interested, call for information packet 443-840-1819. The Surgical Technology (ST) series is a 13-month course of study divided into 4 modules. Surgical Technologists are integral members of the surgical team who work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses and other surgical personnel to deliver care to the surgical patient. Surgical Technologists must have the ability to work under pressure in stressful situations, be detail oriented, and be able to work quickly and accurately. They must be keenly sensitive to the surgical patient and other members of the surgical team. Clinical eligibility is in part dependant upon a criminal background check and random urine drug testing. Cost of testing is the responsibility of the student.
