Trace the development of Baltimore from 1729 to 1815. We will focus on the events, merchant princes and privateers responsible for Baltimore’s growth during the Revolutionary War period and the War of 1812.

Perspectives on Jesus $70, $55 seniors
From biblical films to the DaVinci Code and the Jesus Seminar, Hollywood and the media have presented various perceptions about this important figure. Examine a variety of perspectives on the life and teachings of Jesus. Explore the particular view points of the gospel writers, the apostle Paul, early church fathers, contemporary scholars and viewpoints of Jesus from other religious traditions.

African American History $261, $89 seniors
Examine the origin of African American people in continental Africa and trace the Black experience in America to the present. Journey through history from African roots, transition to slavery, the realities of slavery, opposition to slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction and its aftermath, Jim Crowism, Black nationalism, African American participation in the World Wars, institutional development and the modern Civil Rights movement. This class is also offered for credit as HIST 116.

History of the United States $261, $89 seniors
Survey America’s early clash of cultures. Discuss topics such as America’s European and African background, settlement, Revolution, new government, expansion, and sectionalism through the Civil War. Participate in an in-depth analysis of selected issues, periods, personalities or institutions in an effort to understand the youthful nation’s changing, often clashing attitudes and values. This class is also offered for credit as HIST 111.

Jazz: Pathways of a Living History $59, $55 seniors
Learn the fundamentals of Jazz history and expression. This class takes students from the beginnings of the music through its development as America’s primary original art form. While it is designed for those with a more basic knowledge of the music’s history, it will also benefit Jazz aficionados and practitioners. Gain a working knowledge of Jazz history through listening sessions, viewing sessions, readings, and lectures.

The American West $70, $55 seniors
Recapture the imagination of the American peoples’ fascination with the Old West. Historical facts will be separated from the volumes of fiction found in writings, legends and films. You'll discuss Native American and European encounters, the pre-Civil War West, the Westward Movement, the Indian Wars, dime novels, wild-west shows, heroes and villains, everyday life, writers and films.

Appreciating Sherlock Holmes $46, $46 seniors
Enter the world of Sherlock Holmes and discuss the great adventures of literature’s most famous detective. All new material will appeal to both experienced and novice Sherlockians.

English Afternoon Tea $35, $35 seniors
Experience the history and customs of English afternoon tea. Topics include tea types and traditions. Food fee of $12 payable at first class.

History of Design in Maryland $55, $55 seniors
By examining furniture, tableware, silver, and fine arts, you can discover the history of decorative arts in Maryland from 1640-1940. Study the design, materials, and artists of the period and come away with a greater understanding of the history and origins of the design used in this state.

Contemporary Sculpture 20th into 21st Century $46, $46 seniors
Explore three-dimensional art as it has developed within the 20th and 21st centuries. Discuss the social contexts that inspired a variety of three-dimensional art forms. We will look at images of work from this time frame, and engage in a lively dialog of its visual and social merits. The final session will be a visit to a museum or gallery.
