SINGLE STEP PROGRAM
For over 35 years, the Community College of Baltimore County Single Step Program has been changing lives by providing programs for adults with disabilities. Single Step provides students with academic, pre-vocational, social, and independent living skills necessary for success in college study, employment, and adult life.

Students' development is supported through:

  • Basic skills instruction specifically designed for special learners
  • 6-1 student-teacher ratio
  • Community-based field trips
  • Interactive learning activities designed to connect learning with students' real lives, goals, and communities.

Summer Life Skills Institute
Are you ready for the real world? For the first time, Single Step offers students a summer of independent living skills, community exploration, and employment preparation on a CCBC campus.

The New Frontier: From Entitlement to Eligibility

This course is designed to provide students with information regarding services available as they transition from public schools' special education programs to adult disabilities services. Topics to be covered include sheltered employment, pre-vocational programs, Social Security coverage, financial assistance for college courses, community college programs and services, services that end after exit from public schools.

Managing the Early Childhood Classroom
Total Cost: $120 (Tuition: $30 Fees: $90)

This course is designed to give students hands on instruction in best practices for managing typical, challenging behaviors and situations within a daycare or preschool setting. Topics to be covered include positive versus negative reinforcement, use of reward systems, focusing on positive behaviors, classroom set up and arrangements to meet children's needs, setting routines and clear expectations, consistency of reinforcement and expectations, engaging students in rule setting and management.

Literacy and the Young Child

This course is designed to give students hands on instruction in best practices for teaching early and pre-literacy skills to preschool age children within a daycare or preschool setting. Topics to be covered include phonemic awareness, art projects that enhance literacy instruction, dramatic play, early sight word vocabulary building, use of music in teaching literacy, and selection and creation of classroom materials used to teach early literacy.

Mathematics and the Young Child

Topics to be covered include measurement of volume and weight, fractions concepts, adding, subtracting, multiplying and comparing fractions, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing sums of money, calculating percents, following written directions, reading to complete a task.

Single Step Program and Talmar Gardens and Horticulture
The Garden Project

This 10-hour course is designed to help you build the perfect garden using basic geometry, measurement, basic botany, and basic design principles.
This course will teach you:

  • How plants grow and develop
  • How to identify plants indigenous to the Mid-Atlantic
  • Basic steps in the care of plants and flowers
  • How to use math to plant a garden
  • How to use basic geometry skills to design a garden
  • How to use color in basic floral design
  • Styles of garden design

Warehouse Technician Certification Program
Earn a living in the fast-growing world of warehouse and distribution work. With courses located on the Dundalk and Essex campuses, students will learn to:

  • operate forklifts,
  • perform tasks required in a warehouse or distribution centers,
  • complete an 8 week internship at an area warehouse
