GTL 001 – Roads To Algebra

Find relationships and patterns in numbers to investigate numerical values of the unknown. Through a variety of learning activities, use manipulatives and "hands-on" equations to increase the ability to reason algebraically and solve equations.

Course Objectives:
1. solve positive linear equations with one variable using pictorial representations,
2. solve complex linear equations with one variable and negatives on a 'balance beam', and
3. solve and graph function tables with two variables.

GTL 018 – MATH: Creative Problem Solving

Learn to solve "real world" math problems and puzzles. Topics include balance and its relationship in solving numerical equations; word problems and turning words into numbers; creative-thinking games; reviewing money decisions; types of graphs and their practical uses.

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate the ability to solve numerical equations and word problems,
2. discuss how numbers relate to ┬┐real┬┐ world situations, and
3. demonstrate the ability to use and interpret different types of graphs.

GTL 024 – CSI: Forensic Detectives

Learn about the science of forensics at a crime scene. Topics include an introduction to forensic science, collecting and identifying fingerprints, examining hair and fiber samples, identifying blood spatter patterns, identifying footprints and using cast materials, analyzing documents and the fundamentals of crash dynamics.

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate a basic knowledge of forensic science through discussion and class participation,
2. demonstrate the ability to apply three crime scene investigation techniques,
3. identify three disciplines in the field of forensic science, and
4. demonstrate the ability to apply the scientific method in a crime scene investigation.

GTL 052 – BRAIN GAMES T0 IMPROVE MIND

Course Objectives:
1. identify different styles of learning,
2. identify basic problem solving skills,
3. identify similarities and differences between left and right brain functions,
4. demonstrate an understanding of how this knowledge can enhance one's learning and memory functions, and
5. demonstrate through class participation simple de-construction of basic puzzles.

GTL 053 – SCIENCE/ADVENTURE/EXP/BIOLOGY

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate an understanding of basic principles of biology,
2. use a microscope as a scientific tool,
3. perform basic experiments and study processes, and
4. demonstrate through class participation scientific problem-solving methods.

GTL 055 – Spanish Language and Culture

Explore the Spanish language and culture. Topics include language skills, numbers, family members, colors, food and animals.

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate an understanding of basic Spanish language;
2. discuss basic Spanish cultural aspects including food, music, art; and
3. complete a simple conversation in Spanish.

GTL 058 – Cool Math for Kids

Math is more than just numbers - it's the key to solving problems and puzzles you encounter every day. Discover techniques for solving math problems through practice, fun activities and creative-thinking games and see how numbers relate to the real world.

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate the ability to solve numerical equations and word problems,
2. identify basic problems solving skills,
3. discuss how numbers relate to the 'real' world situations, and
4. demonstrate the ability to use and interpret different types of graphs.

GTL 059 – Explore Chinese Language and Culture

Explore the rich and fascinating world of Chinese culture through the centuries. Take the first steps in listening to and speaking the Mandarin form of the language through basic conversational, reading and writing skills.

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate some basic conversational skills,
2. develop the ability to read several very basic phrases,
3. recognize and write some basic Chinese characters, and
4. demonstrate an understanding of the three basic elements of Chinese culture and its contribution to world history.

GTL 060 – Drawing and Painting Studio

Obtain an introduction to basic drawing and painting. Use various drawing and painting tools to draw from both observations and their imaginations. Develop observation skills and explore elements of drawing such as line, shape, value and perspectives.

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate an understanding of line, shape, value, and contour through class exercises and lectures;
2. demonstrate an understanding of composition and negative space through in-class drawing exercises and take home assignments;
3. identify basic drawing techniques; and
4. demonstrate proper drawing techniques using crayons, colored pencils, and oil pastels.

GTL 061 – Kitchen Chemistry: The Science of Baking

Mix together two major ingredients - the fun of cooking and the excitement of chemistry experiments. Learn the science of baking from bread and biscuits to muffins and cakes along with chemistry of the ingredients, flour treatments, flour-testing and baking techniques.

Course Objectives:
1. demonstrate an understanding of basic everyday chemistry,
2. develop the ability to make two simple baked goods, and
