“Transforming lives through teaching and learning”
About the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) at CCBC
CCBC’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning was established in 2008 to promote ongoing, college-wide discussions about teaching and learning practices to improve student learning and success. Deeply rooted in the Baltimore area, CCBC is focused on providing affordable, high quality education. It is essential that faculty and staff collaborate and are engaged in a cross-discipline exchange on teaching knowledge, methods, and technology.
As Maryland’s largest and most powerful higher education provider and number one provider of workforce development training in the Baltimore Metropolitan area, CCBC’s CETL provides leadership in maintaining focus and visibility for the college’s mission. It cultivates a campus climate based on excellence in teaching and learning by endorsing solid connections between the career-focused curricula and the liberal arts.
The workshops CETL is offering are based, in part, on faculty and staff responses via questionnaires, workshop evaluations, individually raised issues and more. In addition to offering individual workshops, CETL has also created six main courses of study. When successfully completing all workshops within a course of study, the participant earns a “course of study” certificate, in addition to the individual certificates that are the culmination of each workshop/seminar/symposium/event. The six main courses of study are “Classroom Pedagogy,” “Distance Education,” “The Leader in You,” “Assessing, Evaluating, and your Work,” “College Policies and Procedures,” and “Discipline-Specific Issues.”
The Center encourages faculty and staff to serve as workshop facilitators and is looking for workshop suggestions on an on-going basis. The center also serves as an area in which faculty and staff can make connections by exchanging ideas and experiences, either during gatherings, meetings, events, symposia, or workshops. Believing in the existing wealth of knowledge and excellence, CETL is committed to recognizing faculty and staff successes and work via on-going exhibits, as well as via a Teaching and Service Award. These awards will be student-based and are currently in their early stages of development.
As a point of reference, CETL is providing documents and links ranging from “Best Practices” to “Stress Management” on the center’s web page and at its offices. We are also collecting conference calls, grant applications and other professional development opportunity notices to share with faculty and staff. Lastly, the center is working on establishing further developmental programs that connect students, instructors, and staff, thereby focusing on teaching and learning across the college.
