Students In Free Enterprise is a nonprofit organization that gives all students the tools to learn the free enterprise system in a real working situation. SIFE challenges students on more than 800 college campuses nationwide to take what they are learning in the classroom and use their knowledge to better their communities. SIFE is not limited to business majors. In fact, non-business majors tend to benefit the most!
SIFE is a global organization active in more than 40 countries. SIFE is funded by financial contributions from corporations, entrepreneurs, foundations, government agencies and individuals. Working in partnership with business and higher education, SIFE establishes student teams on university campuses. Guided by faculty advisors who are named Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellows in honor of the late Wal-Mart founder, SIFE Teams establish a variety of community outreach programs that teach free enterprise. SIFE is fundamentally premised on the basis of service learning – by giving back to the community, students and citizens learn and benefit.
Under the guidance of Professor Larry Aaronson, the Director of the CCBC Enterprise Institute, the CCBC SIFE Team was formed in September 2007. Dr. Kathleen Gandy, Program Coordinator for Accounting, is the Sam M. Walton Faculty Advisor. CCBC SIFE currently has more than 100 members. Membership is absolutely free, and even when a student graduates, they stay connected as “SIFE Alumni.”
Throughout the academic year, SIFE teams conduct projects. The CCBC SIFE Team completed more than thirty projects and forged more than twenty on- and off-campus partnerships during the 2007-2008 school year. SIFE projects must address one of five educational topics: Market Economics; Success Skills; Entrepreneurship; Financial Literacy; and, Business Ethics. CCBC SIFE Team projects this year included teaching concepts such as budgeting and wealth building via a financial literacy lecture series; helping new and existing companies to grow through marketing consultation and Internet web design; developing and hosting a Civility Symposium; and, helping numerous non-profit organizations such as the League of Dreams and Catonsville High School’s "Catonsville Goes Coastal.” Additionally, CCBC SIFE helped budding entrepreneurs get their plans off the ground by sponsoring the “Getting Started As An Entrepreneur” lecture series and by providing business plan development help. CCBC SIFE is particularly proud of their involvement with this year’s 7th Annual CCBC Women’s Expo.
The CCBC SIFE Team is grateful to many people and organizations. In particular, the SIFE Team would like to thank the CCBC Public Relations Office, the Catonsville campus Office of Student Life, the CCBC Enterprise Institute and the Catonsville chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges.
