Requesting Cyber-Tutoring

Cyber-Tutoring also referred to as “Internet” or “Web-based” tutoring, offers busy students an excellent opportunity to pursue their educational goals at times and locations convenient to them.  These sites are offered over the Internet, and in many cases, do not require on campus attendance.  Convenient? Yes, but online learning is not for everyone.  To succeed in such an environment you need to be an independent learner, well organized, disciplined, and constantly on-task.  To increase your chances for success, read the following information, and make sure that you can comply with the requirements before you decide to use Cyber-Tutoring.

Step 1: Take the self-assessment test

Menu

Taking this quick Self-assessment test will help you determine how well Cyber-Tutoring fits your personal circumstances and characteristics.

Step 2: Check the minimal hardware requirements for Cyber-Tutoring

Menu

Ø Internet Access:

o       Cyber-Tutoring at CCBC requires Internet access. If this access is via a modem, 28.8 Kb is the minimum access that is feasible.  Faster connections are preferable. E-mail access is also required.

Note: A large number of our online courses utilize WebCT software. If you are taking a WebCT delivered course and are accessing it from your office, you may run into problems with your company’s network and firewalls.  If you have difficulty logging into your course, refer to the Online Help Desk for potential solutions.

Ø Minimal Computer Hardware Requirements:

o       IBM/Intel machines :  Pentium-90 with at least 32 megabytes of memory, a minimum of 2 Gigabyte hard-drive and monitor.  A sound card and speakers may also be required.

o       Apple Macintosh: Power – PC based machine with at least 32 Megabytes of memory and a minimum of 2 Gigabyte hard-drive.

Important Note: These are the minimal requirements for taking an online course as well as using Cyber-Tutoring.

Step 3: Check the minimal software requirements for Cyber-Tutoring

Menu

The following software requirements apply to Cyber-Tutoring sites that use WebCT.  WebCT sites are recognized by the WebCT icon associated with them.

o       IBM/Intel machines:  Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows ME, or Windows 2000

o       Apple Macintosh:  System 7.5 or better

Ø    Browser Interface:

o       Any version of Netscape 4.x is supported. However, Netscape 4.72 is preferred.  Netscape 4.78 and Netscape 6.x are not supported.

o       Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x and higher is supported with the exception of Internet Explorer 5.5 (Service Pack 1).

To check to see whether you have a WebCT compliant browser, go to WebCT’s Browser Tune Up Page.

1.      Check the version of the browser and the status of any plugins you need for the cyber-tutoring site you are planning to use.

2.      If you do not have a WebCT compliant browser you should either:

a.       Upgrade your current browser to a WebCT compliant version from the Tune Up Page or…

b.      Go to either Netscape’s or Microsoft’s download area website and download a different WebCT compliant browser.  (See Step 2 – Software Requirements on this page or the WebCT Tune Up page for WebCT compliant browsers)

* Note to AOL Users: If you are using America Online for your Internet access, you might have conflicts with the built-in AOL browser.  AOL’s browser is customized for the AOL network and may conflict with some portions of WebCT. If you experience problems with your AOL browser, we recommend that you do one of the following:

Ø     Option One:

o       Complete your AOL connection

o       Minimize your AOL window. DO NOT CLOSE YOUR CONNECTION.

o       Open a new instance of your browser window by clicking on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop or from your START menu on your computer.

o       Access your course through the new Internet Explorer browser window, not the AOL window.

Ø     Option Two:

o       Download and install a stand-along-browser that is WebCT compliant. (We suggest Netscape 7.2).

o       Connect as usual with AOL.

o       Open the browser you installed without disconnecting from AOL.

o       Access the URL of the Cyber-Tutoring site.

 Ø      Browser configuration:

The following browser configurations apply to courses that use WebCT. WebCT courses are recognized by the WebCT icon associated with them.

Ø     Java and Javascript should be enabled

Ø     Cache set to reload the page every time

Configuring Netscape Navigator:

  • To enable Javascript and Java in Netscape Navigator, open your browser. From the Netscape Navigator toolbar:
    • Select Edit
    • From the drop-down menu, select Preferences
    • Under the Category heading, click Advanced
    • Ensure that Enable Java and Enable Javascript are selected
    • Under Document in cache is compared to document on network, select Every Time.

Configuring Internet Explorer:

  • To change cache settings in Internet Explorer, open your browser.
    • From the Tools menu, click Internet Options
    • Click the General Tab
    • Under the Temporary Internet Files, click Settings
    • Under Check for newer versions of stored pages, select Every Visit to the Page
    • Click on the Advanced Tab
    • Under the Microsoft VM, ensure that Java console enabled and Java logging enabled are selected
    • Click OK
    • If you selected Java console enabled, restart your computer

Note: Both WebCT and Non-WebCT courses may have browser requirements unique to them. Please refer to the course syllabus for course-specific browser requirements.
