OVERVIEW:
During this 9 day trip, you will embrace the beauty of the Austrian Alps with quaint villages, pristine lakes and fertile valleys of Innsbruck and Salzburg as well as the famous passion play in Oberammergau, Germany. You will visit the beautiful town of Innsbruck, the "capital of the Alps" where you will see modern architecture interspersed with 800 year old buildings. Innsbruck is an Imperial city which was once the seat of the Habsburg princes. This town is also home to the Wies church in the foothills of the Alps, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site built in the late 1740's to protect the statue of the Scourged Savior, which miraculously shed tears in 1738. You will see the famous Neuschwanstein Castle which was the model for Disney's famous castle. You will visit Salzburg, the birth place of Mozart and see the sights from the film, "The Sound of Music", including some beautiful gardens there. Your trip will then take you to the Oberammergau region, via the Bavarian capital of Munich. There we will visit the Olympic Park site of the 1972 Olympic games and view it's interesting architecture. We will also view the famed Baroque style architecture of the city with a visit to Marienplatz, the most scenic square of the old town. The Rathaus-Glockenspiel clock with its ornate 42 bells and 32 life-sized figures that depict various parts of Bavaria's history is in this square. From there, we will travel to the beautiful town of Oberammergau where you will experience the famous Passion Play. The original play goes back to 1634 when the villagers, put on a play, asking God to ward off the Bubonic Plague. The Plague never affected the village and the villagers vowed then to put on the play every 10 years. There will be plenty of time for leisurely exploration on your own throughout the trip and you will enjoy a farewell dinner during a break of the play on your final day, to celebrate a most memorable trip.
