OVERVIEW:

Travel with this faculty led trip to Ghana. There you will stay in cabin-style accommodations at the Kokrobitey Institute. The trip includes 2 lectures, which may include topics such as environmental or societal awareness of Ghana. and 4 experiential activities, which may include participating in Calabash carving and decorating of a gourd, a Batik Workshop, making paper. or helping to make sustainable stoves for the locals. There will be guided sightseeing of Accra, the largest city in Ghana and considered the economic, commercial and manufacturing center of the country. You will see reminders of the British occupation, markets, art centers and the Black Star Square, where you will hear about the history of Ghana's independence from Britain. The trip will also take you to the Cape Coast, the capital of Ghana, which was founded by the Portuguese in the 15th century. You will visit Wilmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482. It was an important trading post before it became an important stopping point for the Atlantic Slave Trade. It is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will visit Kakum National Park, a rain forest and home of nearly extinct plants and animals, where you may take a canopy tour, and finally an excursion to Lake Volta to experience Ghana's natural beauty.
