There are many resources through the library and the Internet to do your research on horticulture. Here are just a few suggestions:
Books: Most of the books on Horticulture & Gardening are in the SB section and Botany books are in the QK section of the library.
Do a subject search using the CCBC Dundalk Library Catalog to find books on your topic. Hint- Start with a subject search on a broad topic, ex: landscape design or narrow your topic with a keyword search ex: garden and pest.

Some of the periodicals we own at Dundalk for the Horticulture Program are HortTechnology, Flower & Garden, Fine Gardening.

Search the individual online magazines/journals by going to Electronic Magazines, Journals, and Newspapers by Title & Subject
Browse by subject - choose the category life sciences and agriculture than choose gardening and horticulture and search within the publications.
Please follow the instructions for off-campus access if you are not on campus.
Search Tips for Databases - Remember to try different search words to find information. Use your particular topic or use broad terms (Example: "landscape design", plants and pests to look for topics.)
Citing Sources -Make sure you use the correct citation for your research material.

Use Search Engines, such as Google or Meta Search Engines, such as Vivismo to focus your search for web sites in your field.
To get better results connect your terms with the Boolean term "and" (ex: gardens and design) or put quotes around a phrase (ex:"pest control".)

Sustainable Trees and Shrubs- An outstanding site from the University of Rhode Island that promotes the use of trees and shrubs best adapted to the proposed planting site. There is a very useful searchable database based on plant or site characteristics.

Plant Databases:
*The PLANTS Database provides standardized information about the vascular plants, mosses, liverworts, hornworts, and lichens of the U.S. and its territories. Extensive, inclusive - more than you will ever want to know. An important part of this are the plant range maps. Contains information about plant taxa, both vascular and nonvascular, known to occur at native species with the US. It has a subject index with a huge list of Web sites grouped by subject and a short description. This site is kept current but does have an overwhelming amount of sites.

International Plant Names Index - http://www.ipni.org/sample_searches.html The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) is a database of the names and associated basic bibliographical details of all seed plants. IPNI is the product of a collaboration between Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, The Harvard University Herbaria , and the Australian National Herbarium.

Specialized Databases - some with only plant images
Botany Vascular Plant Images - http://www.csdl.tamu.edu/FLORA/gallery.htm According to Native Vascular Plants, they are most of the familiar plants and "have systems for transporting water and photosynthetic products and are differentiated into stems, leaves, and roots." (Nonvascular plants are "the algae, fungi, and mosses and lichens.") This site contains over 8800 plant images. Access is by family-level browsing (Latin names) or by "a 'string query' option" similar to keyword searching.

California Plants and Habitats - http://elib.cs.berkeley.edu/photos/flora/ A collection of more than 20,000 color images of native and naturalized California plant species and habitats, each image linked to scientific information on that species. Searches can be done on any or all of fields such as: Name (scientific or common); Location; County; Type (e.g. wildflowers, trees, vines, algae); and Color. Part of the UC Berkeley Digital Library Project.
Plants Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases - http://www.ars-grin.gov/duke/ The USDA Agricultural Research Service hosts this collection of searchable databases. Medicinal Plants of Native America has thousands of records documenting medicinal uses of botanical species used by over 100 Native American tribes. It is searchable by plant name, tribe, and use. The Ethnobotany Database is international in scope and can be searched by plant name, country, and medicinal use. The Phytochemical Database includes pharmacological, toxic activity and assay information on plants. The Food plant Database provides information on Native American food plants. There are links to sites concerned with medicinal and poisonous plants, nutrition, and an ethnobotanical dictionary.
