Search the Web - Search Engines

Search engines are computer programs (robots) that scan the contents of the web. The keywords that are typed in the search inquiry box link you to sites with your search terms.

Google logo
Search engine that ranks web sites by its popularity of other sites linking to them. Excellent for general searches. Graphic, PDF, in site and other advanced feature searching available.
Yahoo www.yahoo.com/ or
search.yahoo.com/
Yahoo! is one of the best known and most popular Internet portals. Originally just a subject directory, it now is a search engine, directory, and portal. Includes the Inktomi database which previously included Alta Vista and All The Web search engines.
Ask Jeeves www.askjeeves.com
Ask Jeeves uses crawler-based technology. These results come from the Teoma search engine that it owns. Ask Jeeves is doing innovative things with invisible tabs and with what it calls Smart Search.

MSN http://search.msn.com/

One of the largest of the Web search engines. The basic search screen only shows a few options, but the Advanced Search link has a full range of search features displayed.

Exalead www.exalead.com/search/

Exalead is a new beta search engine from France, it has an interesting and different approach to presenting results. Key search features include truncation, proximity, and some nice sorting of results.

Gigablast www.gigablast.com/

Gigablast has one single database of indexed Web pages including PDF, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, PostScript, and Excel files. No additional databases or portal features are available at this time.

AllTheWeb.com alltheweb.com

Powered by Yahoo, you may find AllTheWeb a lighter, more customizable and pleasant "pure search" experience than you get at Yahoo itself. The focus is on web search, but news, picture, video, MP3 and FTP search are also offered.
