Black History Month Gets Early Military Sendoff
Faculty, staff and students at CCBC Catonsville are well aware that
Black History Month is celebrated in February. However, they also know
that exploring and celebrating various cultures throughout the year
makes the campus a stronger learning community. With that in mind, CCBC
Catonsville saluted African-Americans in the U.S. military during a
special series late last year. The purpose of the series was to show
historically the military contributions of African-Americans and
celebrate their accomplishments within the community.
Those presenting during the series included Ruby Glover, local jazz
diva; Paul Stillwell, who talked about the contributions of the first
African-American officers in the U.S. Navy during the Second World War;
Rev. Glenn Rodgers, retired Air Force Chaplin; Houston D. Wedlock, a
member of a Maryland-based Buffalo Soldiers group; Derrick McCall, local
artist from the Artistry Life Studio; and the Milford Mill Academy Jr.
ROTC.
"It is our hope that this series will become an annual event, housing a
multicultural area for the maintenance of oral histories and other
resources, which are celebrations of the role of American military
persons in United States history," said Fred Bartlett, Jr., coordinator
of the series.
