CCBC Catonsville Hosts 28th Annual PowWow

[Photo caption: People came from miles around to see the traditional clothing, dance and artwork at the PowWow rich with Native American culture and traditions.] Thousands of people came from throughout Maryland to enjoy the 28th Annual PowWow at CCBC Catonsville in August.

More than $11,000 in prize money was awarded to the winners of a dance contest. Other scheduled activities included basket making and storytelling. Nearly 20 vendors from North Carolina, New York, Michigan, Maryland and Florida showcased and sold authentic Native American jewelry, drawings, food, music, clothing, books and arts and crafts.

"This year's PowWow was the best in the history of the event," said Dennis Seymour, event coordinator at CCBC Catonsville. "It's important for the public to realize that there are Native Americans among us and that the traditions and culture are passed on and shared with everyone through PowWow".

The event was sponsored by the Baltimore American Indian Center and the Native American Indian Student Association of CCBC Catonsville.

Did you know? CCBC ranks 18th in the nation in awarding associate's degrees to Native Americans (per the June 24, 2002 issue of Community College Week).
