CCBC Hosts Fourth Annual Service Learning Institute
During the summer, faculty from all three CCBC campuses participated in
the college’s Fourth Annual Service Learning Institute. Some of the
highlights of the five-day Institute were a special presentation on
Service Learning by Rosalyn King of Northern Virginia Community College,
and a field trip to southwest Baltimore. During the trip, the group met
with several representatives from “Operation Reach Out South West” and
then spent two hours working on a neighborhood cleanup project
coordinated by Van Beall, husband of Willa Brooks, professor of
Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies.
After the cleanup, the group met with a minister and deacon of a local
church involved in an after-school pilot program for at-risk
neighborhood children. The group also visited a Police Athletic League
(PAL) center on Rolling Road in Randallstown.
"What started as a concept has now become a course,” said Michael Sanow,
CCBC Service Learning Coordinator. “The Institute encourages students,
faculty, staff and administrators to volunteer. Service Learning is an
important component and concept to incorporate into the classroom, as
well as into one’s own life."
The following full- and part-time faculty members participated in the
Institute and plan to incorporate service learning into their classes
this fall: Nicole Baird, Willa Brooks, Ty Busch, Barbara Crawford, Jim
Cutrone, Sue Fentor, Rivalee Gitomer, Jennifer Joyner, Diane Hunter,
Karen Shavin, Nelda Nix, Marianne Perlman, John Pisarra, Donna Riehl and
Diane Van Stone.
