CCBC CHESS TEAM WINS FIRST MARYLAND INTER-COMMUNITY COLLEGE
CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
Baltimore County, Md. -- The Community College of Baltimore
County (CCBC) Chess Team won the first multiple community college chess
tournament in the state of Maryland. Held at Frederick Community College
(FCC), CCBC participated along with teams from FCC and Carroll Community
College (CCC).
Mark Harris, Matthew Reynolds and David Rader, students at CCBC Dundalk,
represented the CCBC team. The trio won all of the matches in the first
two rounds and went on to capture the tournament with a 12-2 record.
Harris and Reynolds remained undefeated throughout tournament play.
While this was a first competition for the CCBC team at the community
college level, some other participants were seasoned tournament players
in the United States Chess Federation. That didn’t seem to provide them
with an advantage though, as the CCBC team dominated the other schools.
“Our morale was high going into the tournament,” exclaimed Harris. “I
thought they (FCC and CCC) would be tough, but I knew we would do well.”
CCBC’s Chess Team is tutored by Russian Chess Master Arkadiy Frenkel who
teaches chess for beginners at the college.
Joe Schatz, coordinator of the Command Spanish program at CCBC is the
Chess Team advisor.
