Highlights include Ethics Week, Justice Month and 'West Side Story'
Baltimore County, Md. – The CCBC April 2008 calendar is jam packed with special events and programs for all ages and interests. Join us on the Community College of Baltimore County campuses as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary.
April 4

Career Development Services and Student Employment at CCBC Catonsville is holding its spring “Job Fair 2008” 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 8 in Room 100 in the K Building on the Catonsville campus, 800 S. CCBC Ethics Week explores “The Ethics of Journalism”
CCBC's Performing Arts and Humanities department is sponsoring its annual Ethics Week programs on “The Ethics of Journalism,” in conjunction with the Community Book Connection’s focus on Michael Eric Dyson’s book Come Hell or High Water. CCBC Ethics Week programs are free and open to the public. Receptions with the speakers will follow all presentations.

Don Rojas, internationally recognized journalist and political commentator, and founder of The Black World Today, the only Internet portal dedicated to serving the Black community worldwide. His career has included stints as communications director for the NAACP, executive editor of New York Amsterdam News, press aide to President Maurice Bishop of Grenada, to name only a few.

The English Department in the CCBC School of Liberal Arts hosts its annual Creative Writing Forum 7 p.m. Friday, April 11 in the J Building Lecture Hall (J-137) on the Essex campus at 7201 Rossville Blvd.
Noted poet, essayist and novelist Andrei Codrescu, distinguished professor of English at Louisiana State University, will be the featured speaker. April 14 –Justice Month event
CCBC School of Justice’s fourth annual Safe Driving Seminar will be held 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Monday, April 14 in the K Building Theater on the Dundalk campus, 7200 Sollers Point Road. Representatives from the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, MADD, Baltimore County Police and other agencies will speak.
Following the formal program, demonstrations of the Pennsylvania DUI Association Safe Driving Simulator, Seat Belt Convincer, Blind Spot Awareness and BGE Hotwire Simulation will be held outdoors on the Dundalk campus. This free event – in advance of the Prom season – is geared toward high school juniors and seniors but is open to the general public. CCBC School of Justice invites residents and business people in the Southwest Baltimore County community to attend a Justice for Victims Crime Seminar to be held 6 – 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 15 in the Q Building Theater at CCBC Catonsville, 800 S. Rolling Road. This seminar on “how not to become a victim” is presented in conjunction with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (April 13-19, 2008). This event is hosted by the Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce, the Baltimore County Police Department—Wilkens Precinct, CCBC School of Justice and CCBC Catonsville Foundation, the Arbutus Business and Professional Association, the Lansdowne Baltimore and Professional Association, UMBC, St. Agnes Hospital Foundation and the Wilkens Police and Community Relations Organization.

Performing Arts at CCBC presents West Side Story, a modern day tale of star-crossed lovers based on a concept by Jerome Robbins and music by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. This production, in celebration of CCBC’s 50th Anniversary, showcases the talents of CCBC’s music, dance and theatre students and faculty.
Performances will be held 8 p.m. Friday, April 18, Saturday April 19 and Friday, April 25; 3 p.m. Sunday, April 20; 10 a.m. Thursday, April 24 and 12:20 p.m. Monday, April 28 in the B Building Theater at CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Blvd.

CCBC’s Baltimore Symphonic Band will present its Spring Concert 7 p.m., Sunday, April 20 at Perry Hall High School. American music old and new is the theme. This year the orchestra is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story” as well as CCBC’s 50th anniversary. Featured as soloists are Christopher Williams and Christopher Wolfe, both members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, who will be performing music of Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton. CCBC Dundalk Honors Program presents a community-wide Spring Thing Festival at 12 p.m. Friday, April 25, outside in front of the J Building on the Dundalk campus, 7200 Sollers Point Road. The event will showcase the Dundalk area's best singers, dancers, performance and visual artists in a talent competition. Come by and help judge the contest! Music at CCBC presents a special workshop, How to Audition Successfully, given by Dr. Margaret Olson, coordinator of voice studies at Morgan State University, 12:20 p.m. Friday, April 25 in the E Building Recital Hall on the Essex campus, 7201 Rossville Blvd. Dr. Olson will give practical advice on auditioning dos and don’ts for both vocalists and instrumentalists. Information on resumes, applications and performance strategies for college and professional auditions will be discussed.

April 26 – CCBC 50th Anniversary event
Dancing with the Stars, CCBC’s 50th Anniversary Gala, will be held 7 p.m. – 1 a.m. Saturday, April 26 at Martin’s Valley Mansion, 594 Cranbrook Road in Hunt Valley. Attire for the gala is black-tie optional.

Get ready to raise your skirts and bob your hair as we follow small-town Millie Dillmount in her journey to New York City to marry for money instead of love.The musical is filled with colorful characters, madcap adventures, dancing stenographers and the glamour and high life of Manhattan.
