CCBC celebrates Black History Month

Baltimore County, Md. – The Community College of Baltimore County is holding a variety of events on its three main campuses during February in conjunction with Black History Month.

February 7
The Office of Student Life at CCBC Catonsville will sponsor a discussion titled Through the Wire: The State of Young African American Males in Baltimore 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 in K-100 on the Catonsville campus, 800 S. Rolling Road. Tony Alleyne, Student Success Strategist, will lead the discussion on the plight of young African American males in Baltimore and the influences that contribute to statistical data that indicate 76 percent of these young men do not finish high school. February 8
The CCBC Essex Office of Student Life launches its Black History Month celebration with Black History Soul Café featuring Ladies Verse at 12:20 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, B-214/215 at CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Blvd. Light fare will be served. February 8
Music at CCBC kicks off its spring Music Forum series with tenor Issachah Savage 12:20 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 in the Recital Hall, Building E, CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Blvd. Savage will perform art songs by African-American composers and Negro Spirituals. February 12
CCBC Dundalk Office of Student Activities celebrates Black History Month with the Nego Gato Music and Dance Ensemble, 11:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12 in the Student Lounge in the K Building on the Dundalk campus, 7200 Sollers Point Road. The troupe presents the rich rhythms of African-Brazilian music, dance, and capoeira, the acrobatic martial art/dance taking the world by storm! February 14
CCBC Catonsville Office of Student Life presents blues musician K.J. James, who will perform A History of the Blues at 12 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14 in the cafeteria in the K Building on the Catonsville campus, 800 S. Rolling Road. James, noted for his deep baritone voice and fluid mastery of the guitar, is among the modern greats of classical country blues. February 15
CCBC Essex Office of Student Life will show the documentary film, Congressman Robert Smalls: A Patriot’s Journey from Slavery to Capitol Hill, 12:20 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15 in the J Building Lecture Hall (J-137) on the Essex campus, 7201 Rossville Blvd. The highlight of the event will be a discussion after the showing of the film with its director, Adrena Ifill. The film chronicles the rags-to-riches story of Congressmen Robert Smalls, who went from being a slave to a Civil War hero to a master politician in South Carolina. February 20
CCBC Essex Office of Student Life Spotlight Speaker Series will feature former Congressman and NAACP President Kweisi Mfume for a discussion on African American Involvement in Politics 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20 in the B Building Theatre on the Essex campus, 7201 Rossville Blvd.

Congressman Mfume has a long and distinguished record of involvement in politics. In 1979, he won a seat on the Baltimore City Council by a margin of three votes. In 1986, he was elected decisively to the US Congress, an elected position that he would hold for the next decade. In his third term in Congress, he served on the Ethics Committee and the Joint Economic Committee of the House and the Senate of which he later became chair. Mfume served as chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus and later as the Caucus’s chair of the Task Force on Affirmative Action. In his last term in Congress, he served as the House Democratic Caucus’ vice-chairman for Communications.

After his congressional stint, Mfume served as the president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for nine years. Today, Mfume remains a force in the national and regional African American political scene. For more information, call 443-840-1572. Free and open to the public.

February 20
The CCBC Catonsville Office of Student Life hosts an Umoja (Unity) Roundtable at 12 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20 in the cafeteria in the K Building on the Catonsville campus, 800 S. Rolling Road. The roundtable addresses issues of racial stereotyping, use of the “N” word, etc. For additional information, call the Office of Student Life at 443-840-4322. Free and open to the public.

February 27
The CCBC Catonsville Office of Student Life presents a discussion on The New Face of Corporate America: African American Women Moving Forward at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 in K-100 on the Catonsville campus, 800 S. Rolling Road. Tony Alleyne, a student success specialist, and Mark Williams, director of Counseling, Career Development and Job Placement services at CCBC Catonsville, will lead a discussion on the milestones made by African-American women in America’s corporate sector and the achievements made in the last decade. July 10-13, 2008

CCBC and the Maryland Humanities Council will sponsor Chautauqua 2008 at CCBC Catonsville, Civil Rights: Taking a Stand, featuring portrayals of historical figures – The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Thursday, July 10); Governor George Wallace (Friday, July 11); Rosa Parks (Saturday, July 12) and Malcolm X (Sunday, July 13).
