CCBC welcomes University of Maryland Law Professor Sherrilyn Ifill as guest lecturer for President’s Distinguished African American Lecture Series
Ifill lectures on 'The Power of Law to Affect Social Justice'
Baltimore, Md. -- The Community College of Baltimore County welcomes Sherrilyn Ifill to the Essex campus 10 – 11:30 a.m., Feb. 28 as the guest lecturer for the President’s Distinguished African American Lecture Series. Ifill, a nationally recognized advocate in the areas of civil rights, voting rights and judicial diversity and decision-making, will speak on the topic The Power of Law to Affect Social Justice. The event takes place in the B building theater.
Ifill joined the University of Maryland faculty in 1993 and teaches a variety of courses including Civil Procedure, Legal Writing and a seminar on Reparations, Reconciliation and Restorative Justice. She is also the cofounder of the Reentry of Ex-offenders Clinic, a clinic that focuses on the challenges surrounding the reentry of formerly incarcerated individuals into Maryland communities.
Prior to joining the University of Maryland, Ifill served as an assistant counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. in New York, where she litigated voting rights cases. Even during her tenure at Maryland law school, she has continued to litigate and consult on cases on behalf of low-income and minority communities.
Ifill received her bachelor’s degree from Vassar College and her juris doctor from New York University. She serves on the board of the Open Society Institute in Baltimore and the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore City.
