Three CCBC teams advance to 2008 NJCAA Nationals
CCBC Essex Men’s Lacrosse, CCBC Catonsville Women’s Lacrosse and Softball
vie for top honors
Baltimore County, Md. – The Community College of Baltimore County had a super sports weekend with three of its teams winning regional championships to advance to the nationals.
Men’s Lacrosse
CCBC Essex (9-6) Men’s Lacrosse team is scheduled to meet Herkimer County Community College 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10 at Nassau Community College in Garden City, New York in the 2008 National Tournament Semi-finals. The Essex Knights, coached by Brian Duncan, defeated Howard Community College (11-3), 12-9, in the Region XX Men’s Lacrosse Tournament at CCBC Catonsville. Andrew Reinhardt of Monkton, Md. was named Offensive MVP and Anthony Kikola of Rosedale, Md. was selected as Defensive MVP. Essex athletes named to the All-Tournament Team were: Neal Barthelme of Towson, Md., Matthew Gordon of Denver, Co., Peter Raab III, of Fallston, Md. and Kenneth Ushman of Menlo Park, Ca. CCBC Catonsville players Aaron Caruso of Perry Hall, Md. and Aaron Solomon of Fairfax, Va. also made the All-Tournament Team.
Women’s Lacrosse
CCBC Catonsville defeated Harford Community College, 17-7, to capture the 2008 NJCAA Region XX Women’s Lacrosse Tournament held at Anne Arundel Community College this past weekend. The Lady Cardinals now face Herkimer County Community College in Herkimer, New York in the opening round of the 2008 NJCAA Women’s Lacrosse Invitational Championship. CCBC Catonsville, coached by Tom Taylor, is looking for its sixth national championship. Kelly Viens of Millersville, Md. was named the Region XX Tournament’s Defensive MVP and Jessica Baublitz of Baltimore, Md. was named the Region XX Tournament’s Offensive MVP. CCBC Catonsville student athletes were named to the All-Tournament team including: Ashley Bruce of Eldersburg, Md., Shameka Gordon of the Bronx, NY, Courtney Berger of Whitehall, Md., Emilie Melka of Baltimore, Md. and Kyle Evans of Woodbine, Md.
Women’s Softball
CCBC Catonsville captured the NJCAA Division II Region XX Softball Championships with consecutive wins over CCBC Dundalk (5-0), Frederick CC (6-2) and CCBC Dundalk (4-1) this past weekend at Kemps Mill Park in Williamsport, Md. The Lady Cardinals (29-8), who are currently co-Maryland JUCO Champions, are coached by Chuck Slater. The team will advance to its third NJCAA Division II Fast Pitch Softball Championship in the last four years on Thursday – Saturday, May 15-17 in Normal, Illinois. CCBC Catonsville players making the Region XX All-Tournament Softball team are: Amy Guyton of Elkridge, Md., Saige Steinmetz of Pennsburg, Pa., Stacey Rouse of Catonsville, Md. and Sloane Van Meter of Baltimore, Md.
