Baltimore, Md. -- The Community College of Baltimore County welcomes Dr. Gloria White-Hammond to CCBC Dundalk Feb. 4 as the guest lecturer for the President’s Distinguished African-American Lecture Series. The program takes place from 11 – 12:30 p.m. in the Theatre (K Building). White-Hammond, who wears many hats including pediatrician, pastor and missionary, will speak on the topic “A Mission of Health and Healing from Dundalk to Darfur.”
Dr. White-Hammond has worked as a pediatrician at the South End Community Health Center in Boston, Mass. since 1981. She is also the co-pastor of Bethel AME Church in Boston. A great humanitarian, she has worked tirelessly to further women’s and children’s causes both locally and globally.
Within her local area, White-Hammond founded a program called “Do the Write Thing” for inner-city girls between the ages of eight and 17. This project which began in 1994 with four girls, now serves over 550 young women through small groups in two Boston public schools, two juvenile detention facilities in Boston and on-site at Bethel AME Church. Globally, Dr. White-Hammond has worked as a medical missionary in several African countries including Botswana, Cote D’Ivoire and South Africa.
Since 2001 she has made several trips into war-torn southern Sudan where she has been involved in obtaining the freedom of 10,000 women and children who were enslaved during the two decades long civil war. In 2005, Dr. White-Hammond traveled into Darfur, western Sudan to listen and learn from female victims of genocide. She recently served as the national chairperson of the Million Voices for Darfur campaign and is the co-chair of the Massachusetts Coalition to Save Darfur.
Dr. White-Hammond is a member of the Board of Trustees of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Board of Overseers for the Tufts University College for Community and Public Service and the Board of Christian Solidarity International. Troy University also honored her with the Rosa Parks Woman of Courage Award in 2006. Dr. White-Hammond received her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Boston University and has a Doctorate of Medicine from Tufts Medical School.
