Minority Students Gain New Leadership
CCBC Essex Welcomes New Director for Office of Minority Affairs
The Essex Campus of The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC Essex)
has named Owen L. Watkins as its new director of the Office of Minority Affairs.
Watkins comes to CCBC Essex from Radford University in Radford, Va. He brings
broad experience in the areas of multicultural administration, diversity services
and admissions.
Watkins was formerly the director of Multicultural Services at Radford University.
There since 1993, he was responsible for both the International Student Services
Office and Diversity Services. He coordinated annual and special programs for
international students, counseled and served as advocate for students of color,
organized seminars and events, and assisted in minority student recruitment
among other services and activities. Watkins’ teaching experience includes
instruction to new students on their transition to college life, to resident
assistants on student development theory and problem solving techniques and
to academically troubled students in the areas of academic performance, skills
development and assertive behavior. He founded and served as advisor to both
the Black Male Alliance and Hispanic American Heritage Association on the Radford
University campus. Watkins began his service on the Essex Campus on Jan. 16.
