I am CCBC

Shantayia Miller
CCBC student, McPhail scholar

“I came to CCBC because I heard really good things about the Nursing program here,” says Shantayia, “and Catonsville is easy for me to get to. So far, I really like the classes and the faculty really stick with you.”

Making the transition
Shantayia jumped into her college career right after graduating from high school. To help ease the transition, she took part in the McPhail Scholars program. The program grouped her with other new students as well as advisors and mentors to help ensure her success.

Shantayia found this particularly helpful. “I didn’t know anybody and I had never been to college. I didn’t know what it was going to be like, but right away the program gave me friendship and support.”

Juggling life, school work
Shantayia attends school full time right now, but she also works many hours a week as a care manager at an assisted living facility.

Because of her work schedule and financial needs, Shantayia will likely attend CCBC part time next semester. After she graduates from CCBC, she wants to get a job at Johns Hopkins or Mercy Hospital. There, she can continue with her studies and work, a busy schedule that suits her.

“It’s real challenging,” Shantayia says of juggling her responsibilities. “But in a way it helps me. When you have a job, your time is limited. You know you just have to get things done.”

She is confident that she can get the job done at CCBC.

“It’s a good college,” she says. “And it’s really good for me.”
