EXTRA SESSION ASSIGNMENTS
Winter Session Assignment and Load
Teaching during the Winter Session may be used as a part of the annual TLH contract as an overload beyond the annual 30 TLH contract. The following guidelines should be used to determine compensation and to assign faculty for the session:
-
In under enrolled areas, faculty who cannot make a full load for the fall and spring semesters will be required to teach in the Winter Session.
-
If after teaching in the Winter Session to make up his or her load, a faculty member does have a full load in the spring semester, he or she will be paid overload in the spring or be allowed the option of a reduced load.
-
If full-time faculty do not volunteer for overload assignments in the Winter Session, adjunct faculty may be hired.
-
If no adjunct faculty can be found, full-time faculty will be required to accept assignments based on a rotation system.
Summer Sessions
The College, through Summer Sessions of varying lengths, offers a wide variety of courses for its students on all campuses and at extension centers.
Voluntary Summer Assignment To Meet Contractual Obligations
The Summer Sessions should not be a mandatory segment of a faculty member’s contract
-
A faculty member may volunteer to fulfill his or her contractual obligations by teaching during a Summer Session.
-
When a shortfall is indicated, the Budget Unit Head has discretionary power to give such a volunteer precedence over others in the assignment of summer courses.
-
A faculty member should be encouraged to use the Summer Sessions prior to the fall and/or spring to fulfill his or her contractual obligation.
-
Budget Unit Heads are under no obligation to assign summer classes to volunteers for such assignments.
-
The policy for the placement of volunteers in the divisional summer rotation will be as follows:
a. Recency of Opportunity for Assignment
Each staff member qualified for and desirous of teaching assignment will be assigned with those having the least recent opportunity for assignment placed at the top of the list. If more than one staff member is qualified and their recency is the same, then the second criterion must be applied. Opportunities outside the division or unit are also included.
b. Recency of Teaching the Same Course
The staff member who has most recently taught the same course should have preference only after criterion A is applied.
c. Rank
After criteria A and B have been applied, Staff members who hold the highest rank will have preference.
d. Length of College Service
Those who have been in full-time employment at the College for the longest period of service will have preference, only after the first three criteria have been applied.
