Learning About Diversity
Periodically, the CCBC Equity Office offers workshops and seminars and other awareness sharing events to foster understanding of various diversity issues. The office also can develop workshops to address specific unit needs upon request from the supervisor of that unit. "MEET on Common Ground" is a workshop that provides insight into productive ways of dealing with conflict.

CCBC has a resource center to assist individuals in finding and using materials related to the diversity on our campuses. It is housed within the Office of Institutional Equity and Organizational Development (AF205E) at Catonsville. Books, videos, journals, photos, and other resources are housed in the center. In addition to equity materials about race, gender, disability, and religion, this center also contains a growing collection of self-paced materials dealing with general hiring, supervision, leadership and management issues. Materials include books, posters, workbooks, manuals, audio tapes, CD's and videotapes. A separate collection of professional development resources is also contained there. A VCR is available to preview materials.

A number of other CCBC groups and organizations sponsor workshops, conferences, seminars, and speakers of a professional development nature for students, faculty, and staff. Among these groups are the American Association for Women in Community Colleges, Student Activities Offices, Social Sciences Departments, International Student Services Offices, and many others. For the latest information about these activities, check the professional development web site; Daily Post; campus student newspapers and the offices or groups themselves.
The mission of this office is to support the needs of underrepresented populations at CCBC Catonsville by, among other priorities, facilitating the academic, professional and personal development of students, staff and faculty who are members of these groups. The OMA also provides faculty and staff development opportunities to foster the creation of a multi-ethnic, culturally conscious college.

Each CCBC campus has staff responsible for services for students with disabilities. Service providers have a wealth of resources regarding the laws governing services for persons with disabilities (Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the ADA-Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990), various types of disabilities, resources in the community, assistive technology, etc. Print material, videos, and audio materials are also available for either general interest or classroom use. Learning styles and study skills are areas of expertise for disability service providers as these issues have been paramount in the field of learning disabilities for years.
