CAN YOU BE A STUDENT AND A SINGLE PARENT?

It is always hard work. You may have to do it more slowly. Money will be tight. You may be discouraged. Your children may kick and scream - and you, no doubt will lose some sleep. But if you follow some of the strategies that have enabled other single parents to achieve academic success THE ANSWER IS YES!

Here is a summary of strategies some successful students seem to develop. Keep in mind that no one came to school with these strategies. They developed them over time.

• Successful student were determined. Most started school with a great deal of determination which they used to find and organize resources for school. Some students became determined only after taking a few classes and generating a stronger desire for a degree.

• Successful students accepted all the help they could get. They sought and accepted the assistance of friends and family, as well as the support available at TURNING POINT and the community. They knew they needed support to achieve their goals, and in time, they believed they would have a lot to give to others.

• Successful students explored system of support. They learned the "rules of the game" at CCBC and various social services, and they utilized these systems to further their goals. They learned how bureaucracies work - that amid rules and regulations there is room to pursue individual goals. They realized that pursuing one's goals takes persistence, patience, and savvy.

Remember, if you are determined, you can succeed!
