Objective 4: Learning Outcomes

CCBC will agree on learning outcomes for two core programs (developmental education and general education), on strategies to improve learning outcomes, on assessment processes to measure the acquisition of learning outcomes, and on means for documenting achievement of outcomes.

CCBC will conduct a thorough assessment of current programs to determine the extent to which learning outcomes are currently in use and the effectiveness of such programs.

Expected Outcome Priority: Secondary

Outcome Action Steps:

4.1.1 Verify the existence of measurable outcomes for all academic programs (career and transfer).

4.1.2 Develop or refine measurable outcomes for all academic programs (career and transfer).

4.1.3 Submit final documents for review as needed.

4.1.4 Approval of outcomes.

4.1.5 Post approved outcomes on website.

4.1.6 Review current program review procedures and revise outcome assessment component as needed.

4.1.7 Measure the achievement of the outcomes of three sets of programs scheduled for the next three program evaluation cycles.

4.1.8 Revise instruction and program review procedures as needed after each program evaluation cycle.

Completion Date Expected Outcome: June 2001, and June 2004

Notes: CCBC has institutionalized its learning outcomes assessment process which was developed to measure student learning at the course level (see Guidelines for Learning Outcomes Assessment and Classroom Assessment.) This outcome will move us to the next level of assessing learning at the program level. The process is generally a three-year process.

CCBC will conduct a thorough evaluation of the Learning Outcomes Assessment Program and revise the Program as necessary.

Expected Outcome Priority: Primary

Outcome Action Steps: 

4.2.1 Analyze data from first cohort of Learning Outcomes Assessment Projects.

4.2.2 Post findings on college web site.

4.2.3 Revise Program based on findings.

4.2.4 Implement recommended revisions.

4.2.5 Assess impact of new procedures.

4.2.6 Analyze data from second cohort of Learning Outcomes Assessment Projects.

4.2.7 Repeat above steps as necessary.

Completion Date Expected Outcome: Fall 2000 and Fall 2003

Notes: Assessment of General Education courses, especially those that impact large numbers of students, will be an important part of the evaluation process.

 

Expected Outcome 4.3:

CCBC will evaluate the learning outcomes assessment processes for developmental education and general education to determine the degree to which they expand and improve student learning.

Expected Outcome Priority: Primary for Developmental Education; Secondary for General Education (See Underprepared Students outcomes for information regarding Developmental Education)

Outcome Action Steps: 

Evaluate the General Education Program to determine the degree to which the Program is meeting the 7 General Education Program Goals: 

4.3.1 The General Education Review Board will recommend an assessment process.

4.3.2 The Learning and Academic Affairs Council (LAAC) will review the recommendations.

4.3.3 The General Education Review Board will incorporate recommended processes and procedures.

4.3.4 The General Education Review Board will develop an implementation plan and make final recommendations.

4.3.5 Assess the Program Goals.

4.3.6 Analyze the data.

4.3.7 Revise the process based on findings.

4.3.8 Communicate results to all College constituents.
