Author and Harvard University educator Brandon Fleming will be the guest lecturer for the 2022 President’s Distinguished African American Lecture Series. This virtual event takes place 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23.
Fleming will share his story of struggle and success, rising from a substance abuser to a Harvard University educator. Currently serving as Harvard University’s assistant debate coach and founder/CEO of the Harvard Diversity Project, Fleming recruits underserved youth, who have no prior debate experience, into Harvard’s international summer debate residency.
He personally trains these youth to compete against hundreds of elite debaters from 25 different countries. Since the program’s inception, every debate team trained by Fleming has won the international competition.
At the age of 29, Forbes magazine named Fleming to the Forbes “30 under 30” list. In 2020, The Root magazine named Fleming one of the top 100 most influential African Americans in the United States. And in May 2021, North Carolina Wesleyan College bestowed upon Fleming the honorary Doctor of Humanities degree.
Fleming is often noted as saying, “Anything that Black people have not achieved is not due to ability, it’s only due to access.”
