CCBC Essex pool is open for free community swim, offering rare public access for Baltimore County residents through August 15.

Baltimore County, Md. (August 6, 2025) — In a collaborative effort to address the lack of accessible public swimming options in Baltimore County, Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC), in partnership with Maryland State Senator Carl W. Jackson (District 8), is opening the pool at CCBC Essex for community swim through August 15, 2025.

President Kurtinitis and Senator Jackson will officially make the announcement at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 6 in the Wellness and Athletic Center at CCBC Essex with parking available in Lot 2.

Baltimore County currently lacks public community pools, offering only private options, keeping pools out of reach for many county residents. This temporary solution offers an inclusive, welcoming space for residents to swim and cool off during the hot days of summer.

Community swim hours at the CCBC Essex pool are as follows:

  • Mondays & Wednesdays: 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
  • Tuesdays & Thursdays: 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Special Hours: August 11 & August 13, from 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

"This initiative is about equity, access, and community," said Senator Carl Jackson. "For too long, Baltimore County has lacked public swimming facilities—an oversight rooted in long-standing historical inequities. By opening the CCBC Essex pool, we are taking a small but meaningful step toward correcting that history and providing our residents with the safe, shared spaces they deserve."

CCBC has long served as a resource and partner to the communities of Baltimore County, and this partnership reflects the college’s ongoing commitment to public service.

"CCBC is proud to open our doors—and our pool—to the community," said CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis. "As a community college, we are deeply committed to providing inclusive access to the resources we have. By offering this pool to Baltimore County residents, we’re reaffirming our mission to serve, support and strengthen the communities that surround us."

This temporary swim access through Aug. 15 is free and open to Baltimore County residents. Those interested in participating must check-in within the pool area and sign necessary waivers.
