Five CCBC students chosen as semifinalists for Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarships

Awards support the nation’s top community college students in pursuing bachelor’s degrees at four-year institutions

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has selected five Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) students as semifinalists for Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarships. The scholarships support the completion of a bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution. The five are among 485 students chosen as semifinalists from a pool of 1,300 applicants nationwide. The scholarship program considers both academic performance, persistence and financial need. Finalists will be announced in May.

The Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship supports recipients in earning their bachelor’s degrees without incurring debt at any accredited four-year college or university in the United States. The scholarship offers last‑dollar funding of up to $55,000 per year for two to three years, helping to eliminate financial obstacles so that high-achieving community college students can successfully transfer to and excel at the nation’s top institutions.

CCBC students chosen as semifinalists include:

  • Jessica Ambrose, majoring in Creative Writing/Humanities, from Baltimore, Md.
  • Celina De Caul, majoring in Chemistry, from Stafford, Va.
  • Sanjana Gaddam, majoring in General Studies, from Owings Mills, Md.
  • Leah Goodman, majoring in Interior Design, from Hereford, Md.
  • Mai Monica Khai, majoring in Political Science, from Yangon, Myanmar.

“At CCBC, we take great pride in the accomplishments of our students, and being named a semifinalist for the prestigious Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is truly an outstanding achievement,” said CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis. “Congratulations to our five exceptional students whose hard work, determination, and academic excellence have earned them this well-deserved recognition. Their success reflects the strength of our institution and the boundless potential of our student community.”

All five students chosen as semifinalists are scholars in the CCBC Honors College, a unique program that supports particularly talented, motivated and intellectually curious students in pursuing their associate degrees before transferring to four-year institutions for their bachelor’s studies. Honors College scholars receive extra support, including one-on-one faculty and peer mentoring, transfer advising, and early access to experiential learning, including undergraduate research, service learning, and study abroad opportunities.

The Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship provides comprehensive support that extends beyond financial assistance, recognizing that admission and enrollment are only the beginning. Selected Cooke Transfer Scholars receive personalized educational advising from the Foundation’s Deans of Scholar Support, who guide them through the transition to a four-year institution and help prepare them for future careers.

Scholars also gain access to transformative opportunities, including internships, study abroad experiences, and graduate school funding, as well as inclusion in a thriving community of more than 3,800 fellow Cooke Scholars and Alumni who provide mentorship and networking connections throughout their academic and professional lives.

“Through the Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation works to ensure that exceptional community college students have the opportunities to reach their full academic potential,” said Executive Director Giuseppe “Seppy” Basili. “This year’s semifinalists reflect the remarkable talent and ambition found in community colleges nationwide.”
