Baltimore County, Md. (September 28, 2026) -- Community College of Baltimore County hosts a groundbreaking marking the construction start of its Transportation Technology Center expansion project, 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 30 at CCBC Catonsville. The celebration will also include a ribbon-cutting highlighting renovations made to the existing facility.
The $28 million expansion project advances the college’s workforce initiatives to support the growing need for training in electric and alternative fuel vehicles. The new 21,000 gross square foot building addition includes adding a one-story, high-bay instructional facility with vehicle access and a loading dock. It also includes classrooms, specialized automotive technology laboratories, offices, and support spaces designed to accommodate training on traditional combustion engines, electric vehicles and other alternative propulsion technologies.
In addition to the new construction, the existing building recently underwent $1.9 million in renovations. Improvements included reconfigured instructional space, new offices, right-size classrooms and a new compressor room creating a more efficient and modern learning environment for students and faculty.
"The transportation industry is evolving rapidly, and CCBC must continue to evolve with it," said CCBC President Sandra Kurtinitis. "This expansion will ensure our students gain hands-on experience with the technologies shaping today's automotive workforce while preparing for innovations still to come. By investing in modern facilities and training, we are helping meet the workforce needs of employers today and building the talent pipeline for the future."
The architect is Whitman, Requardt and Associates, LLP. J. Vinton Schafer Construction, LLC is serving as construction manager for the expansion portion of the project, and Keller Brothers managed construction on the renovation. Construction on the expansion is expected to be completed in November 2027.
