What is an alternative break?
It’s just that—an alternative. An alternative to taking a break from school and relaxing.Students take a week of their summer or their whole spring break to do service away from their community. They connect with other students and learn about the global environment.
Gain a cultural perspective through significant interactions with people from local societies. You’ll work hard and push personal boundaries—and in the end, you won’t want to leave.
Who Attends?
CCBC students of all majors, backgrounds and matriculation levels have attended breaks. Inevitably on every trip at least one student is experiencing their first flight—some even their first journey outside of the immediate Baltimore area. This is why it is so crucial to us that our breaks remain affordable for our students.
What makes our program unique?
According to Break Away, a national non-profit organization that serves as an alternative break resource center, 153 schools currently sponsor Alternative Break programs. In 2010, 72,000 students participated in an alternative break (including 24 CCBC students). What makes CCBC unique is that of those 153 schools, only 35 are community colleges. Even more significant, CCBC strives to ensure that no student is excluded from the opportunity due to financial limitations. If a student meets the application criteria and is a competitive candidate in all other aspects, we will find a way to assist them.
