Human Services Counseling

Alexis Andersyn, who graduated from CCBC with an associate degree in Human Services Counseling, is a first-generation college student and mother who is “leading by example and demonstrating how it is never too late to pursue your dreams.”

“Due to being a young, single parent, I did not believe college to be an option,” said Andersyn, who got pregnant during her senior year of high school. “I believed that my dream of being a counseling psychologist would be just that – a dream.”

Seventeen years after graduating from high school, Andersyn made the decision to enroll at CCBC. During her first semester, she joined the CCBC Honors Program as a form of accountability, and she has made the Dean’s List every semester, graduating with a 3.89 GPA. In addition to the Honors Program, she is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and a Mellon Scholar.

Despite having to deal with the deaths of her father, her oldest daughter and her children’s father over the years, she got counseling for herself and her son and did not give up her dream of getting a college degree.

“Perseverance is something I know oh so well. I have not been dealt an easy hand, but it has become a learning experience,” said Andersyn. She plans to earn her bachelor’s degree in Counseling and Human Services at Stevenson University and become a Certified Supervised Drug Counselor. Eventually, she would like to earn a master’s degree in Clinical Counseling Psychology, become a school counselor and work with at-risk youth.

“I will continue to work at being a good human, seeking ways to inspire and impact the world by striving for excellence,” she said.
