Jarl Hulbert is an award-winning pianist with performance degrees from California and Arizona. Dr. Hulbert completed his education with a Ph.D. in Historical Musicology from the University of Maryland College Park. His ground-breaking dissertation investigated Viennese piano pedagogy during the time of Beethoven, and he has been invited to speak on his findings at multiple institutions. Most recently a faculty member at the University of Maryland and the Community College of Baltimore County, Dr. Hulbert has also been on the faculty at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Currently Dr. Hulbert teaches Applied Piano and the Piano Repertoire Class at CCBC. In addition, he served as Competition Coordinator of the prestigious William Kapell International Piano Competition and Executive Director of the William Kapell Young Artist Piano Competition. Dr. Hulbert is also co-founder and director of ARTIST Music Academy and founder and director of the William Knabe Piano Institute.
Dr. Hulbert’s accomplishments have earned him recognition in both the Marquis Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World. In addition to being a judge at various competitions, including the Silk Road Festival Piano Competition in Xi’an in 2014, and a featured speaker on a number of topics, he has served in an administrative capacity for many events, including those of the American Handel Society, the University of Maryland’s centennial Copland Festival, and the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center’s American Piano Project. Dr. Hulbert’s recent scholarly work includes an expansion of his dissertation, which will be published by the German firm Hainholz.
