Radiography

Radiography uses x-ray radiation to create images of the tissues, organs, bones and vessels that make up the human body.

Most people are familiar with chest x-rays and also know that x-rays are the best way to diagnose broken bones. However, radiographers (x-ray technologists) perform a variety of these procedures in locations such as the operating room, emergency department, catheterization suites and bedside (for immobilized patients), to produce images of human anatomy for the physician to read and make a diagnosis.

Accreditation

Our program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology and maintains an eight year accreditation status, with the next review in Fall 2030. We enjoy a more than fifty-year history of educating future radiography (x-ray) personnel who are employed in: Imaging centers, physicians' offices, hospitals, mobile companies, surgical centers and urgent care facilities.

The mission of the Community College of Baltimore County’s Radiography Program is to prepare qualified students to be competent diagnostic medical radiographers and skilled members of the health care team at large. This is accomplished primarily by providing a carefully designed curriculum that uses the resources of CCBC and the program's clinical sites to provide students with a foundation of higher education based on the liberal arts and sciences. The Program compliments the overall college campus mission by educating health care providers who will remain in the area as productive working citizens and directly contribute to the betterment of the public health of the community, and a commitment to life-long learning.

Through a combination of classroom and clinical education, students in the CCBC Radiography program will complete the following program goals:

  • Students will be clinically competent.
  • Students will use critical thinking skills.
  • Students will communicate effectively.
  • Students will evaluate the need for professionalism.
  • The program will constantly measure its effectiveness in graduating entry-level technologists.

The Radiography program is a selective admissions program. Enrollment is competitive and limited by the availability of clinical facilities.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will:

  • Demonstrate positioning skills and clinical competencies by selecting appropriate technical factors, demonstrating knowledge of and practicing radiation safety, demonstrating effective patient care practices and evaluating and critiquing radiographic images.
  • Demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrate and apply concepts of professional behavior and ethics.
  • Complete the radiography program and the requirements for the Associate in Applied Science degree.
  • Pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam on the first attempt with scoring at or above the national average on the ARRT certification exam.
  • Obtain employment in the radiologic/medical imaging field within twelve months of graduation.
