General studies major Kumari is scoring big in lacrosse and academics at CCBC.

Kumari Hurd, a general studies major at CCBC Essex, has made an immediate impact as a student-athlete on the college lacrosse team. Known for his dedication on and off the field, Kumari is preparing to transfer to a four-year university to continue both his academic and lacrosse career.

“I chose CCBC because it's close to home and gives me a lot of opportunities to grow,” Kumari says. “Plus, I’m attending tuition-free this semester, which lets me focus on my education and lacrosse without the financial burden falling on myself or my mom.”

Kumari first learned about CCBC through a former lacrosse trainer who is a CCBC alum.

“He told me to practice, keep my grades up and I should have no problem finding a good transfer school where I can continue to play lacrosse,” Kumari recalls. That advice helped guide his first steps as a student-athlete and set him on a path toward success.

From the moment he stepped onto the lacrosse field, Kumari felt at home.

I was welcomed with open arms. Nobody judged me, and that sense of belonging has stuck.

He credits his teammates and coaches for creating a culture where hard work, sportsmanship and personal growth go hand in hand. He has this advice for those thinking of taking part in CCBC Athletics:

“You’re going to have a good time!” says Kumari. “Everyone’s so friendly and outgoing. I was shy at first, and my team basically had to drag me to hang out with them after games. Now I’m with them all the time.”

Kumari has approached the challenges of balancing academics and athletics with focus and determination.

“CCBC has prepared me for the next step, both academically and personally,” he says. He looks forward to continuing lacrosse and pursuing a degree in business at a four-year institution.

Whether celebrating a hard-fought win on the field or sharing a laugh with teammates between games, Kumari is confident that he has built long-lasting connections. His journey shows that with the right guidance, a supportive community and tuition-free opportunities, students can thrive both on the field and in the classroom.

Kumari is part of the Fresh Faces 2025-26 cohort.
