See how getting involved in campus life helped deepen Natalisia Brissett’s college experience and gave her unforeseen opportunities to grow. We sat down with Natalisia to hear more about her experience, the opportunities she discovered along the way and how getting involved shaped her time at CCBC.
Being a student leader gave me a remarkable, life-changing experience, one I never would have had if I simply came to class and went straight home.
A: I was actively engaged in campus leadership and student life. I served on the Student Programming Board, held roles on the Honors Council Committee as both special events coordinator and SGA representative, and participated as an Honors scholar and member of Phi Theta Kappa. I was also involved in the Female Student Success Initiative (FSSI) and contributed creatively through the Arts Club.
A: I initially got involved because others encouraged me, but I soon realized that participating in campus life was shaping me in meaningful ways and enriching my overall college experience. That growth inspired me to get more and more involved.
A: I realized that getting involved had become a meaningful part of my CCBC experience when, as someone who is naturally reserved, I found myself growing into a social butterfly. The more I participated, the more I stepped outside my comfort zone. I became someone students recognized, connected with and even looked up to on campus.
A: One of the biggest things I gained from being a student leader, something I never expected, was a new sense of confidence and identity. Leadership taught me how to communicate, collaborate and show up with purpose. It gave me a voice, a community and a level of self-assurance I did not see coming.
A: Honestly, there are too many moments to choose just one. What I do know is that being a student leader gave me a remarkable, life-changing experience, one I never would have had if I simply came to class and went straight home. If I had to pinpoint one thing, it would be the sense of connection and community I gained, not just with fellow students but with faculty and staff as well. Those relationships are what made my experience truly unforgettable.
A: Receiving this award meant a great deal to me because it affirmed the growth I experienced at CCBC. I began as a quiet, reserved student and became someone who chose to serve by showing up consistently, supporting others and stepping outside my comfort zone. It was both humbling and empowering to see that my efforts mattered, and it reinforced my belief that leadership is about influence, integrity and heart.
A: I would say, make the time; you will thank yourself later. As you get involved and challenge yourself, your confidence will begin to grow naturally. I have not reached the level of confidence I ultimately desire yet, but because I stepped out and got involved, I am no longer where I started. I am already more than halfway to where I want to be.
You will only get where you need to be if you step out, believe in yourself and keep going.
