Lunch and Recess

CCBC Athletic teams give back to the community

CCBC Essex Athletics began a partnership with Colgate Elementary School in October 2015 which continues today.

Dozens of men’s and women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer student athletes travel to the school twice a month to play with students at recess and keep them company at lunch.

“We feel so fortunate to have formed a partnership in which the dedicated student athletes provide love, support, and respect to each of our students,” said Colgate assistant principal Kelly O’Connell. “Watching the interactions between the student athletes and the elementary students is truly amazing!”

Colgate is a Title I school in Maryland’s Baltimore County Public Schools district. The drive behind Title I, according to BCPS, is “to provide supplement resources to economically disadvantaged schools to support the achievement of their students.”

The partnership has become more of a mentor program, as student athletes have fun with the students, relate and communicate with them, and make even the shyest children feel loved and included.

“To see the students smiling is the most rewarding part of this experience,” said CCBC Essex sophomore men’s lacrosse midfielder Tyler Oblong. “It’s very satisfying to be able to have a positive impact on their lives.”
