CCBC in three words: Fun, Dedicated and Uplifting
College Promise Scholar,
When Larry Alston started looking at colleges, cost was definitely a deciding factor.
“With me being on my own and having a limited income at that time, I found CCBC to be the most affordable college for me to attend,” said Alston, a Computer Science major who started CCBC in 2019.
Alston received a Baltimore County College Promise scholarship, and that along with other scholarships and grants has helped him take classes at CCBC stress-free.
I didn’t have to worry about how I would pay for my books, and I do not have to go into debt paying for my education,” he said.
And the flexibility of CCBC allows him to take classes around his work schedule, allowing him to continue his part-time job.
Alston chose to major in Computer Science because he has been interested in technology from an early age. He feels that he is receiving a high quality education at CCBC, and CCBC is also enabling him to make connections in the community, which has helped build his confidence.
“The faculty is always willing to help you to the next level,” he said. “If you’re not sure about what the next step is in your life, you can always go to them to talk and work on options to help you succeed.”
Alston is one of CCBC’s Fresh Faces student ambassadors, which has allowed him to meet new people and encourage others to take advantage of all of the educational and social opportunities at CCBC.
“You’re not meant to tackle life and everything that comes with it alone,” he said. “You’re supposed to break free from your social bubble and have your mind open to meeting new people and all the possibilities that change can bring. This will help you broaden your horizons.”
Alston plans to earn his associate degree at CCBC before transferring to a four-year university to complete a bachelor’s degree. He also would like to obtain multiple certifications in the IT field, which will help him reach his ultimate goal of starting his own IT business.
