The CaMLATest for Non-Native Speakers of English
The CaMLA Test is designed to measure your ability in English.The test evaluates four different skills: listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. There are 80 questions: 25 listening items, 20 grammar items, 20 vocabulary items, and 15 reading comprehension items. You will have 60 minutes to complete the test.
Do not spend too much time on any one problem or you may not have time to finish the test. If you do not know the answer to a problem, you should guess. Unanswered problems will be counted as wrong.
Listed below are a small sample of the types of questions on the exam. These questions will help you prepare for the test and give you a better understanding of what to expect. The answers to each section are provided at the bottom.
The description and sample questions below do not cover the writing sample. Students who correctly answer 50-80 questions on the CaMLA Test must complete a writing sample. Prepare for the test and review sample CaMLA Test questions.

Cutoff scores for ESOL levels
*Writing Sample: Students scoring 50 - 80 on the CaMLA Test must provide a writing sample. The writing sample along with the CaMLA score will be used to determine placement in ESOL 042 and 052 and to recommend further testing for possible ENGL 101 placement.
